I think that micing technique is dictated by the space....not as much by the set...in most cases.

Some places need close micing to defeat transients(sometimes not even made by the band)...some...

Making as much money performing as a drummer as you would make with most college degrees is a matter of luck...and its regular work...there everyday...no dry seasons. Possibility of not getting work...

I would say it depends on how you have your toms tuned...high? low?

Low can be difficult to get nice distinction between 16" and 18" so I would consider a larger interval.

High tunings allow...
