It really depends what you find annoying or not. I would probably start out with eights. But that gets annoying pretty quick. Quarter notes on the met is pretty standard.

When learning bass drum music, be aware of the "check" patter. Yes 32nd notes are intimidating when you have to play four of them on the and of 3 and yes it is intimidating when the dynamic is FF....
