Re: All-Consuming Hate Kills the Artistís Creativity

I thought the reason was pretty clear. I don't like to see limits placed on artistic expression, however well-intentioned. I'm not advocating hate at all. Only free expression. I'll illustrate with...

Re: All-Consuming Hate Kills the Artistís Creativity

I'm going by the most common defintion of the word 'hate,' and the full quote appears to adhere much closer to the definition I am using:

"'Everybody hates something!’ the angry child flings....

Re: All-Consuming Hate Kills the Artistís Creativity

Sure, I guess an argument could be made that "all-consuming" anything will kill creativity, because you've limited yourself to exploring just one thing, but I don't see why "hate" should be singled...

Re: All-Consuming Hate Kills the Artistís Creativity

No, those are not hateful topics, but how would you describe the band's feelings toward the "machine" they were raging against?

Re: All-Consuming Hate Kills the Artistís Creativity

Well, you are using a narrow definition of the word, but that is not the only meaning, nor the most common meaning. Here is the primary dictionary definition:

1. to dislike intensely or...

Re: All-Consuming Hate Kills the Artistís Creativity

Are they? I'd say it depends on the the player and depends on the listener.

Fine, if that's your personal experience. Doesn't mean everyone else's will be the same.

Again, that's fine if it...

Re: All-Consuming Hate Kills the Artistís Creativity

Yes, Agrippa. I recently watched "Marley," a great documentary about Bob Marley (now streaming on Netflix). There's a guy who projected a pretty positive attitude, but many of his songs definitely...

Re: All-Consuming Hate Kills the Artistís Creativity

The idea that any emotion should be suppressed in a musical context is bizarre to me. I believe an artist should explore whatever emotions they are feeling at the time, and if hate is the predominant...

Re: All-Consuming Hate Kills the Artistís Creativity

I don't think this is anything to be proud of or to advocate for. The disengagement of US electorate is a major reason why the average person keeps getting screwed over as deals get made by the...

Re: All-Consuming Hate Kills the Artistís Creativity

Love leads one to rage? They may have been revolutionaries (or marketed themselves that way, at least), but I don't think they were anarchists.

Re: All-Consuming Hate Kills the Artistís Creativity

Seemed to work pretty well for Rage Against the Machine.

Re: Rick Allen (Def Leppard)

Agreed. Were I in Rick's position, I'd have done the same. David Robinson was the drummer for The Cars, and played on all their early albums, generating several hit songs. Then they hooked up with...

Re: My Kit Build Begins!

That is a great shot. Could be used in a Triumph catalog.

Re: Annoying store experience.

I just went through a similar experience of buying a bunch of new gear after a drumming hiatus of a few years. I also went into a local independent music store, and got a similar attitude from the...

Re: Billy Cobham in Hollywood tonight!

I see he's still playing those huge kits. Sweet. Sounds like a great show. I love that Gary Husband was playing keys. How cool is that?

Like you, I have piano regrets. I basically abandoned the...

1950s NYC: A Drummer's Paradise

I was watching a Roy Burns interview on youtube and was really struck by his stories about moving to NYC in the late 50's. If I could go back in time...

Re: Get off your drummer's throne and

I've been accessing this forum for a long time, years before my join date indicates. It seems noticeably less active now than in years past. I wonder if this is my perception or if it's truly quieter...

Re: Should I convert 14" and 16" toms to floor toms?

I did this very recently. Made a thread about it too:

I originally had a RIMS Dynamount (cradle type thing). Didn't like it at all....

Re: NOTHING TO FEAR but fear itself...

Honestly, if I had your kit, I would be hesitant also. Such a beautiful finish. This is why I decided to go with a wrap finish. There not as pretty as wood finishes, but they're still good looking...

Re: Injury stories while drumming

A few years back, I went to a Peaches show. In the middle of one song, she went crowd-surfing. I guess someone in the crowd took advantage of the situation and groped her, because she suddenly...

Re: The Best Drummer in the World

I think it was just a misplaced word. Replace "intelligent" with "knowledgeable" and he has a point. Modern day scientists, for example, have a much greater understanding of the universe and much...

Re: Alan Wren

Big Reni fan here. I love his playing style, and he was a partial influence for me going with a 3-piece setup. Not going to get into an absurd argument about who is the "best" drummer, because I...

Re: My Kit Build Begins!

You might want to try setting up like they do in the video posted above (although it cuts off early). I put my kit together in the same sequence, which I just naturally started doing after years of...
