Syncopation, Dawson methods, Goal tempos?

I would love to hear from all of you, especially those who have studied under Dawson himself. Did he ever suggest goal tempos for how fast these exercises are to be played? Would love to know.

In...

Re: Redundancy Levels Between Common Method Books?

Excellent choice! Now with that book plus Stick Control and Syncopation, you are pretty much covered drum book - wise for at least 5 years!

Re: Redundancy Levels Between Common Method Books?

I bought the 4 Way Coordination book in 2009. I never finished it because I felt that the book was rather dry. I chose other methods to work on coordination and I can happily say that my coordination...

Re: Drumming Barriers/Plateaus

Yes, it did. But only for 3 or more strokes in a row. That's when Colin says it's ok to raise the heel very slightly, about half an inch to an inch. He does this only when he has to play more than 2...

Why, yes of course. Not sure if you've ever checked out Colin Bailey's methods but this is exactly the way he teaches heel down, with the beater coming off the head after every stroke.

Re: Pretty sure my brain is screwing me up...

I would recommend taking time off from practice. You are obsessing about this way too much. You can find my thread here about how I took a break from my practice routine and have back faster than...

Re: Has anyone conquered Alan Dawson's Rudimental Ritual?

I FINALLY HAVE! :)

Currently I have it memorized and can play it cleanly at 160 bpm, played with brushes. Will probably stay at 160bpm for a while before bumping up the tempo.. my goal is to play...

Re: Drumming Barriers/Plateaus

UPDATE: Fast forward 7 months (or so), I have finally broken through this barrier! The craziest thing is that I DIDN'T practice for 3 months!

Re: Took a 3 month long break from practicing regularly

Yes, I guess you could equate it to defragmentation. All I know is that its a really nice feeling when you've finally reached a tempo goal after working on something for some time.

Since last...

Re: Took a 3 month long break from practicing regularly

Hmmm... that's a very interesting theory. I can only remember being frustrated and saying to myself, "this is really hard!". But I was patient enough to also tell myself that with diligent practice,...

Took a 3 month long break from practicing regularly

and now my right foot is faster than ever! It's so strange how it happened this way, but it did.

Basically, I got very busy with my 'day job' and couldn't stick to my practice routine which is...

Re: Playing fast single handed 16ths (Porcaro style)

You need to identify the tempo in BPM where it falls apart. Let's say this tempo is 85 bpm. So, bring the metronome down to 75 bpm. Point is, you need to bring the metronome and work your way up....

Re: Playing fast single handed 16ths (Porcaro style)

Not sure about this. I use the Vic Firth Cindy Blackman model which is incredibly balanced and great for just about everything. It is the perfect weight, not too heavy and not too light. Like a...

Re: Name famous songs where the drummer overplays

I think there's a lot of over playing going on in 'In The Wake Of Poseidon' by King Crimson

Re: Drum Beat - Love will lead you back - Taylor Dayne

There's a shaker playing 16ths in the verse, I think that's what's throwing you off. If I had to play this song, I would play quarter notes on the ride and 16ths on the hi hat, kind of like the...

Re: can the quality of your throne affect your playing?

Ab-so-lute-ly. It is VERY true, please don't let anyone tell you otherwise.

The throne, to me, is the most important part of the drum kit, yet the most overlooked. You need a good throne because...
