Re: Martin Lopez

Well, this was ignored last time I posted, but here goes:

Martin's involved in a bunch of new stuff. He has a new band called Soen, which features non-other than legendary bassist Steve...

Re: What percentage do you practice bread and butter?

I practice doubles quite a bit more than singles, I have to admit. It seems like most people lean towards one or the other, depending upon style.

Re: Paradiddle shift with bass drum

Cool! That's a nice way of doing it. For groove orchestration, it might be cool to underlay a constant 8th or quarter hi-hat with your left foot and to throw accented notes on different instruments.

Re: Traditional grip rimshots?

Nice examples! Yeah, I'm not really trying for the rimshot on every backbeat sort of thing because I mostly play jazz when I'm using trad. grip, but I like to use rimshots for extra big accents...

Re: Traditional grip rimshots?

Right...but what I'm having trouble with is more accuracy than power - hitting the rim and snare together. I'll try focusing on that, though...thanks!

Re: Loosen your weak hand

1. Buy "Stick Control," by George Lawrence Stone.
2. Go through the first 2-3 pages of the book as per the directions: repeat each exercise 20 times, using a metronome, with even dynamics. Make...

Re: Traditional grip rimshots?

Nope. Would that help?

Essentially, yeah. What does that have to do with rimshots?

Re: Troubles with Traditional Grip

Video would help...but some movement of the fingers is normal in trad. grip; you don't want to hold tight or keep the fingers on the entire time like in matched. If you watch any of the great trad....

Traditional grip rimshots?

Hey all,

I've been practicing traditional grip and I've pretty much gotten my chops up to speed (forgive the pun) through rudiment work and Stick Control exercises, but the only thing I can't do...

Re: Can you practice speed only 3x per week?

Not really. Once you have your technique down, it comes down to grunt work and hitting the shed. There's only so much you can improve physically in one sitting - mentally, yes, you could...

Re: How to break down drums in songs.

I personally find music transcription software like Guitar Pro to be incredibly useful for this. The nice thing about GP is that you can play what you just transcribed and listen to hear if it...

Re: Favorite rudiments for application for the drumset?

I don't really "think" in rudiments when I'm playing, but I find myself using pataflaflas quite a bit. A cool lick is to play them ascending up the toms on the right hand with the left hand on the...

Re: Martin "Axe" Axenrot

Yeah, he's gotten quite a bit better as he's eased into Opeth. Even comparing the Albert Hall performance to Roundhouse Tapes, he sounds much more sure of himself and comfortable, and seems to have...

Re: Mike Portnoy says "Hearing the new Dream Theater is painful"

Hearing the new DT is painful to me too, but then the old stuff was too. ;) Nah, it's actually not terrible...nice that you can actually hear the bass for once.

Martin Lopez (ex-Opeth) new projects!

Howdy everyone,

For those of you who remember him, Martin Lopez used to drum for Swedish progressive death metal band Opeth, but quit after the recording of Ghost Reveries for reasons that were...

Re: Danny Carey

Really? I thought that Adam was at least in there a little, doing the melody....or whatever you'd call it. ;) The thing that sounds like a duck.

Some really nice over the bar/conflicting time...

Re: Danny Carey

There is one other "prog" drummer who I've heard that plays with as much feeling and emotion as Danny Carey, and that's Gavin Harrison. Both men nevery cease to continually amaze me. I am listening...

Re: brann dailor

He defintely overplays. Alot. I like Mastodon in small doses, but it gets old for me really quick. I feel like he's pretty repetitive in his fills, too...he has decent hands, though.

Re: Martin Lopez

Fantastic band and player. IMO he really excells with the band's lighter stuff, like on the Dam nation record. Those licks he used in "Windowpane" are cool as hell!
