Re: Steve Maxwell's Rules!

Same here. I'm stuck in Nebraska for now. At least they know what a drum shop IS in Southern California.

The only local drum shop--and I use that term loosely--has devolved into sort of a...

Re: Cover Band Drummists - How accurate are you?

What about for the Weird Al stuff? How do you approach not just the correct part but the correct sound as well? Or is that why you have an arsenal of snares and cymbals?

I have always been...

Re: Anyone prefer standard depth?

Not backwards at all. This is what I've been doing lately. I was going for a nice fat sound with the 6.5 brass and was surprised how low I didn't have to go.

If you try to tune the larger drum...

Re: Anyone prefer standard depth?

I've been messing with the same thing. I recently switched back to my 5" Supra as my go-to snare. Previously, I had used a Pearl Steve Ferrone 6.5" brass signature snare; basically a BB copy.

I...

I think your account has been hacked by Bo Eder. :-)

Re: Rant: Who's in charge at Gibraltar??

And sure enough, Gibraltar makes one of those too. I actually bought one of those quick release clutches when I really needed one (forgot on at a gig...luckily the music store was 15 minutes away)...

Re: Ain't no more fun...

Dude, that sucks.

Although, it's nice to have such a huge reminder of why you quit, right there on the last day, huh? Good riddance.

Re: Ain't no more fun...

Yes please! Inquiring minds want to know.

We really love your war stories. It makes us (me anyway) feel better about our own lives. Sort of like watching Cops...

Re: How do you feel about buying used records?

That reminds me... I recently had to explain to a few younger guys at work exactly what "liner notes" were. They seriously had no clue.

That is a secondary issue that I personally have with...

Re: Anger, dismay and confusion

I've had that happen too. I learned that lesson a long time ago. Play everything as if it's being recorded. Because sometimes, it is.

Just 5 years? Those 3 books could last a lifetime.

Re: Rant: Who's in charge at Gibraltar??

I've wondered the same thing. I use that exact clutch on one of my kits. After messing with it for a while I figured the threads weren't long enough at all. I do appreciate the threadless portion...

Re: Drummers that can't tune drums.

What about head choice? Do you use single ply or 2 ply heads? Do you change one over for the other if the gig is mic'd?

I tune my drums on the high side as well and always use single ply....

Re: The Supra returns ;)

I believe all of the Yamaha signature snares have been discontinued for some time now.

That's unfortunate because they had some pretty cool snares; Dave Weckl's, Roy Haynes' copper snare, Steve...

Re: The Supra returns ;)

I know what you mean.

I recently went back to using my 14x5 Supra for pretty much everything. It had been my 3rd string back up snare, but after pampering it with a new head and new snare wires...

Re: How do you feel about buying used records?

This is exactly the type of system I was thinking of regarding used music. No, I don't see it being implemented any time soon, if at all. But it would be nice to see the artists, who are losing...

How do you feel about buying used records?

Polly's quote in the piracy thread got me thinking about this and thought it deserved it's own thread. Here is her statement:

I've often wondered this too.

I shop used records quite a...

Re: Ain't no more fun...

You just need to find another church, Rogue. Or just stop playing in them, like you have.

We left our church a few months ago after the church made some grand statement (at least they were...

Re: played (maybe joined) in blues band

I would say that if you are wanting to get off in to the blues, just forget the Steely Dan, Porcaro shuffle, and the rock guy playing the shuffle on the bass drum thing, and other stuff like that.

Re: Some tips for you GC Drum-Off gladiators

Great tips, Billy.

One interesting thing I noted was that almost half of your tips were the antithesis of what my last drum teacher thought. And he was an old-school guy too. I didn't take...

Re: Producers killed instrumentalists

I guess it depends on the genre.

In jazz, you have Jeff Hamilton who has led a trio and co-led a big band for quite a while. He writes a lot of songs even though he is known for being "just a...

Re: So this happened!!

Nice article. You have a great way of explaining things, especially the reading music bit, very articulately.

Congratulations! I'm looking forward to more of your features.

At the risk of sounding old, here goes...

I accidentally heard a Taylor Swift song a couple years ago. Luckily I had managed to go a few years without hearing her at all....but I digress.
