Another Drumming First

I played at a blues festival today and the big umbrella they had on stage to block the sun for the drummer fell across my kit. It missed my head but it knocked over my cymbals and floor tom and was...

Re: If you had to choose....

Gadd's signature sticks are small. 7a diameter and 15.5 inches. If they look big in his hands it's because he's a small guy.

Re: Making $ playing drums

Most gigs around here pay around $300. If I'm in my three piece band, it's $100 per man. My other five piece comes out to $60 a person. I don't know of any churches that pay musicians. Every...

Re: Bid like a man!

I have been amazed at what some people will pay for gear on eBay. I recently bid on a used usb drive for my laptop. The winning bid was only $5 less than a brand new buy it now.

Re: Let down by a drummer with chops but no ability

I have a friend who give a couple lessons to the son of a coworker. The kid wanted to play double bass. The kid started running really fast on the pedals out of time. My friend tried to explain...

Re: Profesional Attitude

He didn't have anything to be insecure about. It's obvious when you hear both of us play that he is a much better drummer. The leader was just being nice by letting me sit in. The leader sits in...

Profesional Attitude

There's a drummer that lives around these parts that tours with a big name jazz/fusion band. I'm not going to name names but most of you would know the band, even though the drummer isn't really...

Re: Intersting article on Beats Headphones

If I were to buy a pair of good phones, like the Sony's, would it make that much of a difference if all I'm listening out of is my phone and computer? Is there a good enough signal coming out of my...

Re: Personality Influences Playing

You live in Arkansas and I was born and grew up in Arkansas. The oven of southern heat and humidity perhaps.

Renting kits to try out

We've all had the itch to try out new and/or different drums. It's hard to do this in music stores because they may or may not be tuned well and you are hearing them out of context. Since a lot of...

Re: Personality Influences Playing

I didn't really want to start another solo thread. That was just an example I used for myself. I wanted to discuss how you think your personality affects your playing. Good, bad or ugly.

Re: How to stop playing slightly ahead of the beat?

When I play to a metronome I tend to play ahead of the beat as well. One studio guy told me he just moves my whole drum track over just a hair to line it up with the click. To me it sounds like I'm...

Re: Fast Shuffle Technique

The hi-hat part is really fast. Jeff just plays it so smooth and relaxed it doesn't sound that way. It's like a regular shuffle at 168bpm. That's pretty quick. I'm working on letting that pick-up...

Personality Influences Playing

I was reading some threads about playing solos and started thinking about why I can't play a decent solo to save my life. When I listen to them, a lot of times I don't hear the drummer doing...

Re: Why doesn't anyone make quieter drums?

For some reason, some of the more "enlightened" drummers on here are assuming that because I would like some quieter drums that means I can't, or don't like to play quietly. I love playing quietly...

Re: Drum fads: Past, present...and future?

I've wanted a kit with an 11" tom for as long as I can remember. My 10" always feels a little small, and the 12" seems too big. I know Tama used to sell them, but I've never seen a kit for sale...

Re: Drums are so personal, a bad kit tale

Whenever I use some backline kit at a festival or multi band show, I have to fight myself not to take out a drum key and start tuning. If its a backline provided by the organizers then I will start...

Groove Check

Not sure if this should be in the e-drum section, but since it's more about playing than specific gear, I'll put it here. I just discovered the "groove check" feature on my Yamaha e-kit I use for...

Fast Shuffle Technique

Lately I've been trying to play along to Rosanna by Toto. I've learned the groove and I can play it up to around 150bpm or so, but the song is at 168bpm. (or 84 depending on how you count it.) I've...

Rimshot Variations

When I play any sort of backbeat oriented music, I almost always play rimshots, even on the quiet songs. One thing I like to do is vary whether I use the butt end or tip end of the stick. Contrary...

Re: Pete Cater on Big Band drumming

Some guys do it to give the snare drum more highs. Vinnie Colaiuta doesn't set his drums up on carpet because he says it absorbs to much sound.

Re: (why) Are smaller kicks quieter?

I always thought it was funny that if I have a big 14" rack tom and an 18" floor tom, those are considered loud rock and roll drums. John Bonham ect... But if I put legs on the 14' and set the 18'...

Re: Why doesn't anyone make quieter drums?

That sounds cool. Do you have any sound samples online. Maybe a comparison video with a regular snare. Would these concepts work if you make a whole kit this way?

Re: Drum Shields??

The other thread about quieter drums reminded me of this thread and I wanted to add some comments here. I've been playing at the church I'm at for about 14 years. When I first started playing there...
