Re: Starting a band...EEEK

I recommend playing popular music that other pub bands aren't playing. Why try to be just another band in the sea of pub bands all playing the same music. You are just diluting the pond and making...

Re: Accidentally cleaned the grease off my lugs

Eww, don't use grease. It's nasty and does nothing but collect dirt and dust making for a gross mess. Use a couple drops of 3 in 1 lubricant on the first 4 or 5 threads of the tension rods. The...

Re: What are some unpopular opinions you have (music related)?

I think Lars Ulrich gets a bad rap for no good reason. Yeah, people think his drumming is boring and uninspired and that he can't keep time for shit, but have you listened to the other members of...

Re: Silver Sealer

All the opinions and answers you have found online are the definitive answers. There is no point in asking anymore as the thousands of posts you have already read hold all the information there is.

Re: Opinion on mapex

The good thing about those large hanging toms is that you can buy the mounts on eBay and put them under the lugs. No drilling necessary.

Re: Trying this new hardware configuration

So you get a set of Reference drums, some of the heaviest drums ever made, and complain about the hardware weight?

Re: Selling Yamaha what price?

The kit brand new was probably in the $3500+ range. Most people expect to pay half price for used drums, but these are Yamahas and for some reason they command a better resale price. So if the kit...

Re: A Lesser Kit For Gigging?

I would pick up a used PDP CX kit for gigging. The ones with the wrap finishes. For one, they are well built kits that sound good. Two, the wrap finishes can take the bumps and bruises better than...

Re: Buying/Tuning a Concert Snare Drum

I built myself a concert snare:

Re: How do YOU Tune?

It's been a while since I replaced both heads at the same time on a drum, but I think I start with the reso side and get that to a "medium" level of equal tension. Then I do the batter and get that...

Re: Advice on value of monster vintage Pearl kit

Maybe try contacting Pearl. They may have some interest in the kit for historical purposes. Considering it's age and condition and all the original pieces are there, they may want to use it in some...

Re: Advice on value of monster vintage Pearl kit

You might want to look at old Pearl catalogues and see what were standard configurations for that type of kit. From there, look in to breaking up the kit in to smaller kits or one kit with lots of...

Re: I can't buy a high end snare drum

The most I have ever spent on a snare is ~$350... and I had to build it! But, I really like it's sound and it's look.

Re: Anyone heard of Mair drums yet?

Mair is the "new" name of Ming drums. But the name Mair has been around for something like 6 or 7 years, though. They do a lot of fiberglass, kevlar and carbon fiber drums.

Edit: Damn, Charlie...

Re: Any thoughts about the new PDP Kit? (Sporting the newer PDP Logo)

Well, I think the new PDP logo looks childish. Not a fan. The new lugs, again not my cup of tea. They look cheap to me. The Spectrum is supposed to be a new lower line of drums from PDP, so these...

Re: Weights inside new Yamaha bass drum. Can someone explain how this works?

I'm not sure how heavy those weights are in the Yamaha kit, but adding weight to a drum lowers it's fundamental pitch. Watch the latest episode of "sounds like a drum" on YouTube and you can see how...

Re: more info about 17" floor tom?

Despite my hatred for everything Ron Dunnett, these are probably your best bet for converting that drum in to a floor tom without drilling the shell.

Re: What drums intrigue you that you have NEVER owned

I would say Qdrums, Oriollo and Guru would all be drums I would love to try. I've tried Craviotto, INDe, Jenkins Martin, Kumu, A&F and all are nice drums, but I haven't tried the first three.

Re: Middle tom doesn't resonate

When I had a set of RC's from the early 80's I found that I needed to slide the drums up and down the hex arm until I found the best place for it to resonate freely, then did some very subtle tuning...

Re: Heads over Shells

Overall shell construction does have an effect on the sound of a drum. Thin vs thick, multi ply vs stave/segmented/steam bent, additions of re-rings, bearing edge design, light or heavy hardware,...

Re: Doc Sweeney drums

I know he buys his stave shells from Daville Drumworks. So you may be able to get the same drums a bit cheaper by going direct to Daville.

Re: Can't take PDP seriously somehow

If this were true PDP would have mentioned specifically using NA hard rock maple for these series of drums, but every catalogue dating back to those drums never mentions it. They do, however,...

Re: Can't take PDP seriously somehow

Ugh, I just read the other posts in this thread and there is a lot of misinformation about PDP's drums.

For one, only the Platinums we're made with Hard Rock Maple. Every other Maple kit PDP...
