Re: Gavin Harrison here!

Speaking of your upcoming educational release, Gavin: will there be conceptual material on this new DVD similar to your previous ones, or will it just be like a case study on your work with 05ric?

Re: Circles Transcription?

Gavin and Terry Branam are actually collaborating on a book with his work with 05ric. That's probably what you're thinking of.

Re: Good Rock beats book?

Pat Petrillo's "Hands, Groove, and Fills" is a very good tool for any rock or funk drummer. You should check it out. It's a very modern approach and is DVD/Book/CD combo that has tons of play-along...

Re: Playing with a Shaker

Take it driving with you and play along to whatever's on the radio. It's hard to find a technique that works for you and that sounds smooth and consistent. I remember trying to teach people how to do...

Re: Movie: August Rush

I loved the movie! Very inspiring.

I like when they do a close up of him playing the slap-style guitar and he has man-sized hands :)

Re: I am constantly speeding up. NEED HELP

Maybe your comfort zone is at a certain (faster) tempo, and you're unconsciously trying to get into your comfort zone. You should practice (with a metronome) at a lot of different tempos, with...

Re: How do you define a "drummer's drummer"?

That just means that even/especially drummers can appreciate his drumming. It's not like a musical term or anything. That's all it means. To use an non-drumming-related example, if someone is...

Re: How can i understand Elvin Jones?

If you listen to his playing, his time is based around quarter-note triplets rather than the normal swing time.

To really get a good understanding of how he plays, get your hands on a ton of...

Re: head response / bounciness

Well die-cast hoops, since they are cast out of metal from a mold, are much more resistant to bending, so they are usually a lot easier to tune. Also, die-cast hoops give the drum a different feel...

Re: head response / bounciness

Tuning the bottom head also has a LOT to do with the rebound. Also, the kind of rims you have will affect the rebound (die-cast vs. triple-flanged). If you find that it has nothing to do with the...

Re: Hearing Yourself & Others in a Band

Ok, I'm going to be the first to tell you what everyone is going to tell you: play lighter. If you can't hear what's going on, do what you have to do to hear them. If you're not-so-inclined to learn...

Re: Question: Logic for a Mac

Well, I knew that much. I think I'm going to be doing as much playing around with it as recording. Therefore, all the extras will come in handy - if not to my use then to my enjoyment.

Re: Imaginary Fusion Genres?

Look up Gordian Knot, and their album Emergent. Sean Malone is a jazz bassist playing and composing metal. It's really cool! I think Bill Bruford is playing drums on it too.

Question: Logic for a Mac

Hey guys. I want to get Logic for my Mac, but I'm not sure whether to get Logic Express or Logic Studio (the whole package). Does anyone with experience with Logic have any light to shed on this...

Re: Using transcribe/help with hootie blowfish song?

I wouldn't say that it really matters. Play it whichever way sounds best. Also bear in mind that if you have a tambourine playing with you, you would have to be really tight with the tambourine...

Re: Elvin Jones

This man was truly soulful! I ADORE his live work with John Coltrane. I have the rare Blue Train Live album and I'm bewildered every time I listen!

Excerpt from my (Imaginary) Book

I was bored the other day, so I decided that I wanted to come up with some transcriptions for a favorite fill idea of mine. Then I wrote them down and decided to make it look like a page in a drum...

Re: Hardest instruments to play

The title should be "Hardest Instruments to MASTER"

If that were the case, then I'd say Improvisational Jazz Piano or drums.

Re: Snare drum set up

The snare should be parallel to the ground or, if you prefer, tilted away from you if you play with the traditional grip. Look at how your sticks come down, and make sure they come down directly onto...
