Re: Let's Talk Snare Drums

The bad:

Any and every chromed steel sheet metal shell. Except maybe that perforated OCDP thing; played with a guy that had one tuned up nicely.

The good:

Anything of sound, quality...

Re: Know where i can find a 6.5 tama bell brass 40th?

I totally get that making a shell in the same way that Tama or Mr. Oriollo do takes a very large investment in machinery and skill. I'm just saying that if you had a shell thick enough to hold its...

Re: Know where i can find a 6.5 tama bell brass 40th?

If you had a nice shell to go off of (probably the thicker the better), then making a wax copy and then doing some sort of clay or sand casting should be feasible and not too expensive. By not too...

Re: Thrash Drumming HiHat/Ride Speed

According to WFD, the current single-stroke record for a minute is 1208. That gives each hand 604 beats in a minute, or 16th notes at about 151 bpm. If you're talking about playing straight sixteenth...

Re: 2014 Snare Drum Olympics - The/our results!

What the hell is that tambourine sandwich thing and how did it win?

It's time, Andy. Combination snare drum-mark tree.

Re: Best Intermediate Drumset?

Buy used.

For $700 you could score a $1200 kit that's got a couple scratches. Alternately you could spend $3-400 on a used $700 kit.

There really isn't anything in the beginner-intermediate...

Re: question to all drummers

Drums are goddamned loud. Practicing often with moderate force in an average living room will damage your hearing over time if you don't have ear protection.

If you can't stand over-the-ear...

Re: Flatfoot Technique?

Practice practive practice.

You'll never be able to slam out 16ths at 200 as loud as four on the floor at 140, but you can get them pretty loud. Not sure what "flatfoot technique" is since I can't...

Re: What makes music classic, timeless?

I think the rock and roll style pioneered in the 50s and 60s became a template that's still followed by almost all popular music today. We've all been listening to the same music on top 40 for sixty...

Re: I re-cut my bearing edge today

Well, I've been my usual punctual self. Out of those pictures I took, this one turned out the best. Tried getting the camera to focus on the cardboard so you could see the bearing edge's profile....

Re: Tama Power Metal snares...opinions?

Thanks, mark. If I do get one I might just let it patina like my cymbals...guess it depends on what kind of tarnish it has going on, though. Never heard of Flitz, but I have a couple bottles of...

Re: choosing doubles or singles

Well I thought you meant "one e AND a two E and a THREE e and A four e AND a" when you said every third hit, or maybe "ONE e and A two e AND a three E and a FOUR e and A". Maybe you meant "ONE e and...

I re-cut my bearing edge today

Well, it's past midnight...so yesterday. It was nice out, I was feelin' kinda feisty, I half-recalled reading somewhere about drum builders using sidewalk cement to get a level edge on a shell, and...

Re: choosing doubles or singles

For any given thing that you can play comfortably, if it sounds good, then don't worry about it. I like single strokes more for the kit when I want things to be articulate. Marching snares are great...

The one I was checking out that I liked the most was a hammered 5.5". There's a half decent youtube demo of it and I dig it. A lot of the vids out there are hard to judge though since they're using...
