Re: Really small gigs - setups

Hey Frost, do you mean all the gear I fit in one carry or playing brushes on a music stand?

Re: Really small gigs - setups

I use just a snare drum, hi-hat & ride and I can fit all this gear "on me" in one go so it's easy to get trains/taxis, etc.

A friend of mine has done gigs with brushes just on a plastic sheet...

Bill Bruford is coming to my college.

Bill Bruford is coming to give a lecture (I'm in a conservetoire doing jazz). I don't know much about his stuff apart from he's a pretty big deal. Obviously I still want to get the most out of...

Re: 9 against 4 Conundrum Help Needed

Well I wrote that all out nicely but DrummerWorld didn't like it. Sorry, ignore those numbers.

Re: 9 against 4 Conundrum Help Needed

Boomka's right, sorry bro.

9 "against" 4 is quite literally 9 against 4. That's all there is to it.

Re: The MacGruder Method???

Yeah I'm hitting a similar way of thinking. I've been thinking a lot like a horn player, or just a good improviser - not thinking like a drummer, but just focusing on good musical values

I think I...

Re: What does it mean to have "Feel"

Of course feel is more than technique. Technique is a tool, that's exactly what I'm saying. My technique is very crisp and I use small motions all very close to the drum head usually, and this...

Re: What does it mean to have "Feel"

I disagree. I think technique is something that runs parallel to everything else, like feel. It is NOT about having enough technique or headroom, so that you can execute something when and where you...

Re: What does it mean to have "Feel"

An appropriate feel is largely down to your technique,

Re: music degrees

I'm a few months into my Jazz degree and I'm loving it. A lot of people will tell you that its only benefits are making a few connections, and that it's easy enough to do that yourself. Trust me,...

Re: Jazz comping exercises: Four way coordination/independence

Great idea man, thanks. I've got so much stuff to work through but I'd love to give that a try soon. Sounds like it would give you some really thick textures and colourful ideas.

Thanks!

Lloyd.

Re: Guitar player concerned of me speeding up

5 to 10 bpm isn't that much. It's entirely natural and if the song is being relieved of its groove, then it's probably not to do with that tempo increase. You should be able to groove no matter what...

Re: What's your biggest drumming frustration as a beginner?

I have so many more frustrations as an experienced drummer. I'm doing a degree in jazz now and I feel like I can hardly play. Things were so simple back in the day. Just coasting through without any...

Re: Jazz drummers - having to lose the beat?

I am jealous that you got to see Jeff Ballard play with that trio, he is such an incredible drummer. All that displacement and modulation you talk of takes a lot of skill, and Jeff uses it musically...

Re: Do you ever get tired of it all ?

Since I started practicing heavily and generally working hard towards where I want to be as a musician, I haven't thought about gear and stuff like that at all. No problems with my set-up, and no...

Re: John Riley's "Solo 3"

What universities were you thinking of auditioning for? If it's a conservetoire or a jazz course, then I wouldn't recommend playing a solo piece. The audition panel want to hear you with a band.

Re: New Breed II?

It's very much in the same vein as the first one, but...more difficult? It looks at other styles such as jazz and some odd time stuff too. Looks fantastic.

Re: two books for jazz

Chapin wins.

When you've done it, burn both books and get outdoors.
