Re: Manly Grooves

Cool thread - thank you.

After looking at all the entries I've got to say wy yung's David Jones is the hairiest

Many of them were heavy and for virtuosity I'm glad to see Tower of Power and...

Re: Funk Trio Video

A nice funk groove - enjoyable to listen to.

Given what the guitars were doing I liked your general support - the snare hits generally did a good job of helping everyone keep time. You seem to...

Re: Something another drummer told me awhile ago

Gruntersdad definitely speaks truth with regards to my own skills (or lack thereof).

Not being a drummer by trade - if work takes away my practice time for a prolonged period I find that I...

Re: what should I buy? rmv concept, mapex mbirch or tama superstar

I bought an M-birch and have been very happy with it. I'm glad I did. After six months I can say:

I'm still on the original heads (averaging 30 minutes a day)
I drum for personal fun/challenge...

Re: The Stuff We Really Need

In defense of those of us keeping the music shops in business selling stuff along with all the small club heroes with what audience they do have ...

I'm not a drummer by profession. I make very...

Re: musician's friend

Some of the experiences people relate here have quite a bit to do with shipping.

LM201 - I've never shipped anything to TN other than Hermitage/Nashville and have never had a problem but your UPS...

Re: drum teaching - when do you give up on a pupil?

Makes me think of Steve Martin's movie The Jerk. What sounded like the most basic beat/rhythm pattern that his family would sing on the porch he couldn't begin to synch with. But then, one night when...

Re: Can we please agree that this is the most amazing drum cover ever?

"Greatest ever" will obviously be a matter of opinion but I've got to thank 805 for introducing him to me. I'd never seen Cobus before and found him quite enjoyable to watch along with many of his...

Re: Mitch Mitchell dead at 61.

In MD's Drum Gods II this summer (spring?) Mitchell was one of the "25 Legendary Talents who Changed Drumming."

Mitch's article is titled Freedom, Sweet Freedom with great picture of him on pg 63....

Re: Favorite Tempo Shifts

Whoops! I forgot, from Led Zeppelin II, the Lemmon Song but, even more so, the transition from Heartbreaker to Living Loving Maid is pretty fun.

Though the latter doesn't occur within the same...

Re: Drumming Degree.. worth doing?

One final comment: TNA and others may have noticed this.

I cannot believe how often I run into someone in the world of business - especially those who are successful and at more advanced levels...

Re: Drumming Degree.. worth doing?

I have to admit to brittc89 - I do play drums in the basement. That way the wife and two kids I support with my solo income - from a job in IT management parlayed from a physics major - can have a...

Re: Drumming Degree.. worth doing?

Two thoughts:

(1) There are many math majors who are fairly skilled musicians. Being a skilled drummer may give access to musicians you might not normally meet; especially if you enjoy jazz.

Re: Trying to learn actual proof

I kind of wanted to post this Mike Clark "Loft Funk" YouTube link when you first mentioned AP (and seeing your other post about relapse into music) but resisted. But since Funky Jazzer has since...

Re: Favorite Tempo Shifts

Here is what this site does best:

The Colonel's recommendation of Wolf Like Me - beautiful example in which the drum is literally signalling the tempo change. It is something that is also easier...

Re: Favorite Tempo Shifts

I wish I had run across this thread earlier - it's probably dead by now.

It always seemed to me one song that just does not work without a tempo shift as part of the actual song is The Clash's...

Re: Playing barefoot bad for you.

I play in socks or barefeet because that is how I live at home. Unfortunately it sounds like I may be at greater risk walking around without support on the hard wood and linoleum floors of Castle...

Re: Alcohol and playing

My skills are definitely sensitive to, and impeded by, drink and poor diet. (i.e. - too many Coke's early on).

For me to be in a true groove - and not just a chemically imagined one - I need to be...

Re: What kind of drummer are you?

OK - I've got to agree with 805 here, Totally Impulse. I like to try my hand at anything and everything which kind of sounds like "Jack of All" except for I'm not good enough to classify myself as...

Re: Fruit Flies inside my floor tom!

Ditto with ours - they seem permanent. We even left on vacation for 10 days and they were still here when we returned.

I'm used to finding the kids have left 1/2 a soda somewhere. Grapes in their...

Re: Fruit Flies inside my floor tom!

OK - it's Friday night and I'm all excited because I plan to go purchase a new kit tomorrow. So, I read some Drummerworld.

Meanwhile, the Mrs. has been complaining because for the last 3 weeks we...
