Re: Craviotto Snare

Mark, did you play a 6.5X14 Craviotto at the shop? Do you already have a general preference for depth? My personal preference is deeper snare drums (7X14 is my favorite size). I think the drum you...

Having said that,...

Re: Finishing a raw shell with oil

I use a product called Tried and True Varnish Oil. It's not cheap, but a can may last you a lifetime. Here are pictures of some of my Vaughncraft shells finished with Tried and True.

Re: Who uses a 12, 13, 16 combination?

8X12/9X13/16X16/14X22 or 8X12/9X13/16X16/14X20 were basically the standard sizes when I started playing. Of course, that was a long time ago...

Black Beauties can be found on eBay in the $400-$450 range. If you really want a BB, save until you can pickup one of those. I found a 6.5X14 hammered BB on eBay several months ago with a $400 Buy...

Re: recommend me an intermediate kit?

A real move up would be something like the Tama Starclassic Performer. But I wouldn't call them intermediate, I'd call them pro-level. However, you're looking at $700-$800 for a 4-5 piece shell...

Re: What is your dream kit for 2010!

I'd like a kit made from Vaughncraft one-ply cherry shells-
14X20 BD

Or a Tempus fiberglass kit in the same configuration.

The Nickelworks strainer may have been the first boutique strainer. They were used on many high-end drums, as was already mentioned. However, they are notorious for breaking. I have a Nickel on...

Re: Choosing a snare, metal or wood

What's your budget? If it's under $200, your choices are limited. If it's $300, your choices open up some. If it's $500, you've got a ton of options.

The suggestions below are for used drums.
