Re: Premier Genista

I played a set of maple Genistas that were part of the back line stuff way back in 2011. I was able to tune them to my liking.

Suffice it to say that out of all the backline kits I've ever...

Re: Ever owned or played a "famous" drum set?

I have to wonder if anyone will actually pony up 37 big ones for a non household name drummer's set.

I think he'll get it.

Re: This was a topic of discussion the other day

Words can and do hurt when directly aimed at someone.

I've been scarred by words. Who hasn't?

We're family here. If we can't express ourselves here...then what's the point?

Mr. Gretsched...

Re: Ever owned or played a "famous" drum set?

The closest I got to a famous drum set was in 1982 at the drum shop (barn) of the boutique drum builder Eames, in Saugus Massachusetts. (Joe Sweeny's business) They used to stamp the original buyers...

Re: This was a topic of discussion the other day

Wow you have some really great old sayings.

I haven't heard either one of those before this.

Re: Boodala's (Bonham Triplets)

Linear trips do not come naturally to me. I have to work at them.

One thing I did...when practicing, I made an exercise with accenting the first partial, another exercise accenting the second...

Re: This was a topic of discussion the other day

I take no issue with the descriptive term chicky baby. Because Mike didn't say that to her face. I think it's harmless. Mike is allowed to have his own unpopular opinions. After all, she attacked...

Re: So was the DW Subwoofer a passing fancy?

I'm wondering if Nigel even uses any double bass work for Elton's songs.

I don't see any need. Maybe it's for looks.

Re: Help Choosing The Appropriate Drum Set

Maple is historically tried and true. It's about as balanced as you will hear in drum shells IMO. Walnut makes great sounding toms and bass drums. They are more weighted to the lower end of the freq...

Re: Mixing Brands Drums/Cymbals/Hardware

As much as I like overthinking things, matching stuff is one thing I never thought to overthink.

I must not place much importance on it, because if I did, it would have been overthought by now.

Re: Help Choosing The Appropriate Drum Set

Not trying to be whatever but wouldn't metal drums be the best for metal music?

The song called "Patches" recorded at Muscle Shoals by Clarence Carter.

Re: Next Biographical Film of Musical Artist?

I did not care for Rocketman one bit. It was a true musical, meaning they break into song at wacky places, which I don't particularly care for.

There was one scene where Elton had a party at his...

Re: Band give aways /Burner sticks

Another good story. I still have a napkin some dude handed me that says You Rock.

I like how you leveraged your power position to your advantage :)

Re: Mixing Brands Drums/Cymbals/Hardware

It's 6 of one half dozen of the other, mixing or matching. Whatever trips your trap. Sometimes I forget to even notice what someone is playing if the playing is awesome.

Re: Band give aways /Burner sticks

Funny story. I bet a dollar that in the guys mind, he was a God.

Been there, so I can't say anything. I used to be a God too ha ha.

Re: Tom Sawyer was easier for me to play than Son of a Preacher Man. How can I develop better "feel?

Extremely well said. Especially the more dramatic part. Like you're keeping your cool when everyone else is gearing up for some big change, except the drums. He knows what's coming and isn't changing...

Re: Tom Sawyer was easier for me to play than Son of a Preacher Man. How can I develop better "feel?

With groove, in some cases, space has to be left to allow the listener's imagination to fill it in. If I pass up a fill opportunity, I will get tension in return. Which is a really great deal. Fills...

Re: RATE THIS

Even now that I know it....it's still a difficult beat to play convincingly. A lot of stuff has to integrate together beautifully like a Swiss watch.

So yea, 5.

Re: Tom Sawyer was easier for me to play than Son of a Preacher Man. How can I develop better "feel?

Opinions and suggestions only:

I didn't think your "Preacher Man" video was bad at all. Everything can groove deeper though.

To surgically work on groove, my recommendation would be to get...

Re: Do you have any OCD-type traits about your drums/set-up?

I have to have sticks in my hand.

I have to be sitting down.

There has to be a drum kit to play

The bass drum can't be behind me.

I HAVE to have a footpedal or I wont play.

Re: This was a topic of discussion the other day

It occurs to me that maybe chicky baby likes you Mike. Maybe she wanted to push your buttons to see if and how well you defended yourself.

Girls definitely test guys without letting on.
