Re: Step one to learning ;)

Guys, the "Six stroke roll" as an official PASIC Rudiment is as Bo describes it. PASIC recognizes no other grouping of notes as a six stroke roll

Go to the PASIC website if you like to verify.

Re: The worst gig of my life

Wow, I was away for a day or two and this thread grew considerably.

I may as well chime in again...

At least 90% of the notes you play are on the kick, snare, hi-hat and ride. Set those up well...

Re: The worst gig of my life

My man, your viewpoint in not an enabling one...

It comes down to this:

If you ascribe cause to anything outside of you, you give up control.

What this means (in non philosophical terms) is...

Re: The sound guy

In any field, people skills are critical.

I've never had a soundman that I couldn't win over.

The trick is to pit yourself in their shoes. Do you know how many "great" drummers they have to...

Re: paradiddle time subdivision question

Sure, it would depend on the tempo of the song (and your chops).

Re: paradiddle time subdivision question

Let me clarify this please.

The reason why one set of RLRR at 120 works out is because you are playing 4 notes per beat. That means you are playing the paradiddles as 16th notes.

The paradiddle...

Re: Introducing - Nicolas Viccaro.

Andy, this guy is awesome!

I felt a little better when I saw that he has already achieved a level of notoriety.

If this was just a guy you "discovered" bashing around I would have felt totally...

Re: Is hard to make a living out of jazz? Are there any jobs out there?

I don't think it's ever been easy to make a living as any type of musician.

I would also have to say that the number of young jazz drummers being pumped out annually by schools like Berklee and...

Re: American Revolution: Everything Was Bad if the Drummers Were

C'mon man, you are really reaching on this one.

Pants and hats were also worn by slave owners, should we stop wearing them?

The snare drum is in no way associated (by any logical train of...

Re: Exercises to hit the 'middle' of a beat?

The absolute best exercise I know of for feeling the center of the beat uses a click that can play offbeat 16th notes.

Set the click to play the downbeat (1/4 notes) and the off beat 16th notes.

Re: Exercises to hit the 'middle' of a beat?

I hear what you're saying, but actually, it doesn't work that way.

You can be playing by yourself and still be playing "ahead of the beat"

If you listen to a drummer whose style demands...

Re: The harp as a percussion instrument

Any woman who had that played at her wedding would have just melted. Her friends would have melted as well and then gone green with envy.

Beautiful touch on the instrument.

Re: Who has to play to a click or backing track live?

Remember that a human programs the sequencer. There is the potential for emotive creation (art) in that.

In a blues band, a click would be heinous. In a death metal band like Nile where they are...

Re: Who has to play to a click or backing track live?

I've been playing to a click for over 25 years. I actually feel freed up when the click goes on. It's like: "My buddy with the cowbell is has perfect time so I just play along with him".

It's much...

Re: Is live music dead?

Yes it is true that music is cyclic but the technology has improved to the point that they are combining audio and video into a sensory experience that is almost overwhelming. Plus, most young men...

Re: "You're a drummer? Oh can you play..."

Not too long ago, someone asked me if I could play "Bleed" by Meshuggah.

I told them not without 6 months of working up the double bass hairta.

Re: No rudiments taught in marching band?

I have to say, I wish I had been around this as a kid.

Frankly, as a young metal-head, I doubt if I ever viewed the marching bands as anything but the ultimate in cheesy dorkness. It had to have...
