Try subdividing even further...instead of 4 + 3, try
2 + 2 + 3.

Give this a look/listen (kind of a "1/2-time" 7/8 feel, but with a REAL strong 2 + 2 + 3):...

Buddy was also heavily into martial arts...in WWII he was a hand-to-hand combat instructor in the Marines; he also had a black belt in karate.

Louis Bellson and Steve Gadd were also both tap...

While not a book about drumming, "Rhythms of the Game" by Bernie Williams is a TERRIFIC book that deals with the parallels between sports and music performance. Bernie was a fine baseball player...

Part of that reason is DG says that he injured his foot, and he physically can't do the things that he used to. I think I read that in a Modern Drummer interview.

I think the "scaled down" stuff...

dmacc was spot on for the tempi for the 2/4 solos. However, I found that there are multiple recommended tempi for the 6/8 solos. For example..Solos #11 - 18 could be played at dotted 1/4...
