Re: Do my drums grow with me?

Growing is absolutely glacial compared to how drum arrangements get tweaked on a day-to-day basis. Unless you're in a single set-it-and-forget-it mindset and never move your kit anywhere, I wouldn't...

Re: What's your latest purchase?

Nice! Just ordered new black dots (13,15,18) for my toms this morning from GC. Bummer that the 13" and 15" are back-ordered ... I was actually surprised it wasn't the 18" on back order. Everytime I...

Re: Keller Maple Shells

Since your choices are between Keller 6-ply and Keller 8-ply, it's probably a safe assumption that individual ply thickness will be the same, so don't overthink it anymore than they do :)

I have a...

Re: Old and new

Being far more interested in the songwriting style of a band, how amazing the drummer is is almost an afterthought.

First and only time I saw Tool was their first show in Seattle opening for the...

Re: Anyone prefer standard depth?

I prefer 6.5s for that little bit of "cushion" you get with that much head separation. I need to hear a little breathing room between heads (goes for toms, too).

It's a subtle thing, but I...

Re: Anger, dismay and confusion

Well, this happens to me all the time, and I'm almost never as conservative in my approach at practice as I am during a performance (studio or live). The practice room is where every whimsical...

Re: Any info??

That's too bad. By far my favorite lug casing by Tama - or anyone else, for that matter. Even miniaturized, it looks great.

Re: Irony?

I noticed that with the Geddy Lee signature bass. While it seems to be a very popular model among bass players, you can only get what he uses from the Fender Custom Shop for huge scratch. The MIJs...

Re: When you're in charge, which songs ...

I think I'd just ban the whole idea of playing covers.

Re: Spousal Static - A mini Rant

I was doing some ruminating and soul-searching on this very thing.

The conclusion I came to was that it's similar to getting up and going to work. It's just one of those things you have to do to...

Re: Spousal Static - A mini Rant

Agreed, and this is not atypical.

But - who's responsibility is it to make sure she has something fulfilling to do while he's off playing? If she's used to having him around as a constant...

Re: How our perspective changes

Ha! Funny, Bo, I was just having this conversation last night!

Like you, when I was in my teens I had no inkling that anyone else might find the racket I was making irritating. I figured they...

Re: Spousal Static - A mini Rant

Oh man, the things I could say to this ...

What I can say is I feel you bro. I just went through this shit-show in a major way and it didn't end well.

Now that the dust has settled and new...

Re: I'm up to my butt in grooves.

Sounds like an amazing teacher!

There's so much value in learning other styles of music - you can't really overstate its impact.

For example, I've always been kind of a hybrid Beatles/Hard...

Re: I'm having trouble practicing

Huge +1 on this.

Personally speaking, I never quite understood the obsession with technique to the exclusion of context. It's all about the music. Like most, I'm a sucker for a great player but...

Sounds like a blast, count me in.

-I'm in Seattle proper
-been playing 33 years
-mostly original rock stuff
-currently in a new start-up band with a couple really good guitar...

Re: More Creative on a Smaller Kit

I love the civilian / musician bit! Ha ha! But I have to point out that both have tastes that are all over the map.

I have one foot firmly planted in each grave (civilian and muso) so I don't...

Re: NFL Asks Musicians for Money to Play Super Bowl Read more: http://www.rollingstone.com/music/ne

Wait a sec ... pay to play? Ha! That's easy since I can't remember the last time an act actually PLAYED at that event.

Maybe this is the NFL's way of discouraging an act from wanting to plug...

Re: More Creative on a Smaller Kit

Just listened again and you're right - he did sneak in a tom hit (I found two more at about 2:30 and 4:-ish minutes in). Still no crash cymbals anywhere. Good call, Tony.

That rat-bastard!

Re: More Creative on a Smaller Kit

I'm not sure how this relates but I was listening to Jakob Dylan's One Headlight with Matt Chamberlain, and it's just kick, snare, and hi-hat. No toms, ride cymbal, or even a crash. I don't know if...

Re: More Creative on a Smaller Kit

As I see it, this is the 'right' question. Haha.

I kind of like this idea since it is true (and often overlooked), but I have reservations about calling it "real" or "true" creativity since it...

Re: More Creative on a Smaller Kit

Zactly! In the early '90s, my main kit was a 2 up 2 down 6 piece but I was also playing in another band, which was a two-drummer project and and I put together a little 4-piece frankenkit for it....

Re: More Creative on a Smaller Kit

Ha, yeah I get what you're saying, and my rational side says the same thing, but there's another part of me that thinks there's likely to be more emphasis on playing from the fingers than playing...

Re: The side snare

I couldn't ever get comfortable putting anything to the left of my hats with the lone exception of an EFX crash. I've tried running a side snare on at least two occasions, and once ran a gong drum in...
