Re: What's your latest purchase?

Friend gave me a $100 Amazon gift card for my mumble3rd birthday.

Some of it was spent on drum stuff.

I've finally settled on what sticks I like, Vic Firth AJ4's, so I ordered a pair of those,...

Re: Drumming Karma

From most reports (I've read most of the Doors bios, including Manzarek's and Densmore's) Morrison acted like a self-absorbed jerk to most everyone. His psychological troubles helped make him a...

Re: Graeme Edge

He's one of those drummers that I didn't realize I was so influenced by until I listened to some Moody Blues after starting to learn drums and had the realization.

My verbal vocabulary is not...

Re: Where do all the drum sets go?

Woo-hoo! Glad to hear it! I'll have to check these people out. Of course I know who some of them are, but didn't know they were touring vintage kits. Love Darren Jessee. I once flew down to LA just...

Re: celebrate what would have been his 60th

"Who are these strangers
Who pass through the door
Who cover your action
And go you one more?"

Could have been written about any of the session greats who exceeded SD's expectations, but for me...

Re: Where do all the drum sets go?

Refugee from the guitar world who is also into vintage drums here.

Since I started playing drums, I've observed with interest the differences and similarities between the vintage guitar scene and...

Re: My bizarre, ego-destroying experience

Wow, what a set that guy must have on him. And you, too to take that kind of crap from a trumpet player of all people, and not send him from your room with his silly plumbing department instrument...

Re: Serious timing issue

In the back, I can see a drummer playing, and they aren't featured enough for it to be just for show, so I'll say it's a live drummer.

Who dropped one of the nastiest clams I've heard....

Re: Any Suggestions for Ear Plug Filter Strength?

My favorite plugs are Earasers. They fit better and sound as good as (if not better than) my audiologist-fitted ones.

I don't know what their attenuation is, but I used them when performing in an...

Re: Insane experiments with shells, heads, and tuning.

First, Drum-El, thank you for the great research and sharing of your findings.

It's inspired me to mess around more with my own tom tunings.

I have a vintage Slingerland set with 12-13-16 toms....

Re: Excruciating leg pain the day after a jam session

I find that sometimes my enthusiasm can mask the fact that I'm using my muscles in ways that I have never practiced and pushing them past their capacity.

You don't practice the death metal style,...

Re: Unpopular Drumming Opinion Thread

I wasn't even aware of this, but I pretty much only pay attention to vintage drums and lower-end stuff so I can help with recommendations on first drum kits. The new Pearl Exports, Gretsch Catalinas,...

Great suggestions from everyone else on the music stuff.

Re: Vintage Drum Bearing Edges

This, yes.

If I were doing it for pay, I would have a more precise setup. A slab that is truly checked for flatness (unlike the surplus countertop I use), etc.

As it is, I think I get pretty...

Re: Is It Just Me?

Heck yeah.

For me it's been older DW5000 pedals (with the smaller footboard and single chain). I have 4 of them, and among them, I've set them up as strap drive, turbo cam, and accelerator cam.

Re: Vintage Drum Bearing Edges

In my experience of restoring vintage drums, the operation that makes the biggest difference is getting the edge co-planar (or "level").

The reason behind this is that any high or low spots will...

Re: What kills your buzz?

My biggest drum buzzkill so far is when I sit down with the instruction book and repeatedly mess up a beat or etude that I was able to nail in the previous session.

My strategy is to just pick up...

Re: A guitarist question on a drum forum

A pretty important question is what style of music is the amp going to be used for.

Jangle pop, jazz, black metal, country, hardcore, blues?

For live performance stuff, guitar is usually mic'd...

Re: Drum micing for newbies

Couple of inexpensive Chinese condensers overhead in the Glyn Johns/Recorderman configuration is a good place to start.

You're not getting ahead of yourself; for a new drummer, recording yourself...

Re: Micing my kit with 3 mics

The 3-mic Glyn Johns/Recorderman technique already described is what I use, but as I seem to get plenty of bass in the OH's, I use the third mic close on the snare reso.

For OH's, I just use the...

So far I only use them when I want to get my Krupa on. He made pretty good use of them.

Re: Unpopular Drumming Opinion Thread

Opinions I hold that may be unpopular with many on this forum:

1. Tuning aids like iDrumTune, Drumalyzer, iDrumTech, and the Tune-
Bot are quite useful tools, and after months of having my toms...

Re: Drums are consuming me

OP made me think of the movie Le Mans.

To paraphrase Steve McQueen's character, "When you're drumming, it's life. Anything that happens before or after is just waiting."

Re: Teachers, do you force Crossed hands on beginners?

(disqualifier: I am not a teacher, except for showing a couple of people how to do basic beats)

I don't remember being drawn to open handed when I first started playing, except that the kit seemed...
