Re: Laser Black: replicating an obscure finish?

The trouble is, a photo doesn't really do it justice...you have to see how it reacts to light to know what it looks like. It's a bit like the underside of a CD, except a sparkle/glitter finish rather...

Laser Black: replicating an obscure finish?

I have a Mapex Saturn kit in Laser Black finish that I got off ebay, 12 13 16 18 24 and a 14x6 snare. I'd really like a 10" tom but the finish hasn't been made since 2007 and you don't see many drums...

Re: Bass drum triplets - rusty / struggling :(

Do you actually mean triplets Andy, or just three consecutive 16ths? It sounds like the latter to me. I think it's just a question of slowing it down a bit for a while.

Re: Told to hit harder

I think you might be on to something there. Particularly since it shouldn't have been a volume issue since everything was going through the PA.

Re: What would be your drummer nickname?

I don't get to choose my own nicknames. I have one per band at the moment.

In Gloryhammer it's 'Ralathor, the Mysterious Hermit of Cowdenbeath'

In Jaldaboath it's 'Sir Benjamin Turcopolier,...

Re: The worst gig of my life

I think you are taking all of this very personally...for all we know you played perfectly well and had nothing to worry about, but you obviously felt like you didn't. Did anyone tell you afterwards...

Re: The worst gig of my life

This is pretty much the most important thing of all, being prepared. Lack of preparation sounds like it played a major part in the OP's predicament to me.

Re: The worst gig of my life

What about the people who play kits like the one that was being complained about in the first place? Aren't they similarly entitled to demand the setup they're used to? Can you see the problem here?...

Re: The worst gig of my life

But what's the appropriate response to discovering that the kit doesn't meet your personal standards of playability? Refusing to play?

Re: The sound guy

The OP reminds me of an exchange I had with a house sound engineer at a gig last year. The prologue to this is as follows: the band I was playing with were first on of three, and the headline act's...

Re: The worst gig of my life

It totally depends what you want out of it. If you want to have fun, then by all means be as demanding as you like because if it's not fun then there's no point...but if you want to do it as someone...

Re: German grip, which German?

That makes me think of the Cor Anglais/English Horn (neither a horn nor English), and also some factoid (maybe apocryphal) that said the French Horn is from Germany.

I think the snare drum...

Re: The worst gig of my life

I have played quite a few shows in quite a few countries and I would still need perhaps three hands' worth of fingers to count the number of times I've used my own drum kit. It's just something you...

Re: "Recording Heavy Drums" tutorial by Glenn Fricker

From what I know of him I'd imagine not, he seems pretty particular about his setup.

But evidently not his (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3ivOfkqFmxg)!

Re: German grip, which German?

The story I always heard was that it was because German timpanists usually played sitting down, and French timpanists played standing up.

Re: Preparing for an audition

Why don't you ask them for a bit more detail on what they would like you to prepare? They can't expect you to read minds for this.

Thanks everyone for your kind words, I've sent Amy the link to this thread so I'm sure she will be pleased to read them!

The harp as a percussion instrument

I've posted a few things that my sister's done lately but I think this one might be of more general interest to a community of percussionists such as this! I also think this may be the first time one...

Re: Chris Slade drumming for AC/DC again?

Not exactly sure who I'm quoting here but I agree with whoever it was that thought it was dragging...it kept getting slower! Agonizing! But Rock Or Bust sounded great...very odd. Anyway, I reckon...

Re: Forum shenanigans - LDS 2014 - Photo's & video

It was absolutely infuriating for me to miss this this year! Sadly I had a gig abroad on the Saturday and wasn't back in time to make it practical to get there...

Re: Matt Johnson reflects on Jeff Buckleys "Grace" ... great video

My drum kit used to belong to Matt Johnson once, apparently. Well, it was bought for a Rufus Wainwright european tour in 2007 but he was Rufus's drummer at the time.

Re: Official forum UK meet up/other arrangements/news. London Drum Show!

Apeldoorn, apparently. It's a festival called Brainstorm Festival (http://www.brainstormfestival.com/). It'll be fun I'm sure, but a real shame to miss the LDS...this will be the first year I've not...

Re: Official forum UK meet up/other arrangements/news. London Drum Show!

I've got a gig in the Netherlands on the Saturday...and I have no idea when I'll be back on the Sunday so I can't promise to be there at all, unfortunately...
