Re: I've got the "looper" blues

You'll have to forgive me for saying so, but great musicianship does not trump great personality and social skills. I don't know who this person is, but you enjoy playing with him. However, what...

Re: I've got the "looper" blues

Come on Larry - how good can be be if he insists in using gear that screws everything up? To play great is one thing. To be aware of what he's doing to the other musicians is something else. Are...

Re: I've got the "looper" blues

This is why you've never seen it happening within a band context. For some reason players think they can be combined within groups of people. Just not gonna happen. The greats know this - when...

Re: Applications for 13" tom

But that's the thing, people can learn how to set up and tune drums like pros. Alot of people have and continue to do so. Sometimes when manufacturers try to help people, they create an entire...

Re: Applications for 13" tom

Not so sure Modern Drummer came up with this idea as Anton Fig and Allan Schwartzberg were the first very public drummers to be doing this. This was in Anton's early days with David Letterman when...

Re: I've got the "looper" blues

There's no way around this but everytime someone introduces things you have to sync to, it's headphone and pedestrian playing time. The more you do it with a good monitoring system the easier it...

Re: The Supra returns ;)

Unfortunately I don't. I was in a Guitar Center near my house and they had the one Pearl strainer, and a Ludwig P-85 strainer hanging on the wall. When I compared the two I noticed that the holes...

Re: Cover Band Drummists - How accurate are you?

Heck yeah it works! Have you ever heard the Bernard Purdie half-time shuffle samba? That keeps folks on the dance floor for HOURS ;)

Every song is played like a samba.

Re: "Play something." What do you play?

I do 10-seconds of my fav money beat. That's all I can stand.

Re: 9X13 floor tom? Sensible?

That's not sensible. Don't do it. You'll be disappointed in the end.

I think Akira could've played more notes ;)

Re: Anyone prefer standard depth?

I always have two snares with me on a gig and one is 6.5 and the other is 5 and I like using them both. I get a bit more body out of the 6.5 but have found I can tune either low or high and both can...

Re: Drummers that can't tune drums.

That Bernhard video is from some time ago. Here's a picture of him today (well, at this past NAMM anyway) posing with my wife:

Re: The Supra returns ;)

I had a black galaxy Acrolite too a few years ago and loved it. But I let it go when I realized that I was getting the Supra sound out of it, and already owned two Supras. Acros are very solid and...

Never toured like that. In fact, alot of those memories for me are just blank.

Re: Going on Tour would like some advice!

Wow, really?

I have never gone on a tour where it felt like I was roughing it out in the boonies camping. That ain't never gonna happen at my age ;)

When I go out now on these trips, a nice...

Re: should I jam with a big band???

Just go, have a good time and do your best.

I've noticed over the years, when I was alot younger, I used to overthink alot of stuff when people would ask me to come out and play. What if this? ...

Re: Two and four groovy or... Not?

Check out Steve Jordan's DVD "The Groove is Here" - there's a very cool spot in there where he's talking to Levon Helm on the subject of the band switching instruments, and Levon said this really...

Re: Rant: Who's in charge at Gibraltar??

I've been avoiding all things Gibraltar for some years. I was at one time liking their flat-based hardware, but only the straight cymbal stands made sense. The other stands, booms, snare and...

Re: Drummers that can't tune drums.

Please note I'm not dissin' Larry. The tighter tuning really does work, especially with larger drums in a loud context and no microphones. When you tune so the drum sounds good to you where you're...

Re: Are our ears tuned to tradition?

I was a big fan of that Rickenbacker look as well after seeing Paul McCartney play one (and he was even left-handed!) and even at last year's NAMM they were well-represented with a huge booth. But...

Re: The Supra returns ;)

Maybe I quoted that wrong. I'm not sure if it's discontinued. Maybe my buddy just can't afford to replace it - he did say it was a pretty expensive strainer piece.
