I'll listen to it alot and then start playing it. When I find out what parts of the song are hard to play I keep playing them over and over and then move on to the next thing.

Yea, i have EXACTLY the same thing, i never play early or late in the day, and i prefer to play drums when no1's at home. I wish i had some kind of rehearsal space.

Its good to have some variation in your practicing and also, i think that playing along with songs helps you improve your timing and creativity. So yes i believe its useful to practice songs.

I used to control my hihat with heeldown but i recently started using heelup so I can close and open the hihat with more power. I also think it gives me more control on the pedal.

This is probably because a practice pad gives alot of rebound while your toms probably give alot less. What you could try to do is practice on pillows.
