Re: Black Beauty Head Selection?

I think Ludwig metal snares are pretty forgiving when it comes to heads - they sound good with most any kind of head.

The ones that stand out in my mind are a Ludwig heavy coated, Aquarian Modern...

Re: 5x15 Supralite

I have the 14x8 Supralite, and it's a lot of fun to play. It's too bad they have the "it's "just" a steel snare" stigma attached, because steel can sound fantastic if done well, and the Supralites...

Re: Band leaders

With the 5-piece rock band I'm in now the lead singer is the leader. We rehearse in his home studio, he writes a lot of the songs and lyrics, and he does much of the networking.

That said,...

Re: Acrolite Resonant Head Replacement ???

I don't like the regular Remo hazy snare side on Ludwig drums. They have such a deep collar that once I have the head tuned up where I want it I'm getting awfully close to having the rim meet the...

Re: Just browsing - cool steel snares

I've been totally satisfied by my 14x8" Supralite, and for the price I don't think they can be beat when talking about new drums. Add in the complete range of sizes and I'm sure you could find...

Re: Went to Memphis Drum Shop (again)...

I'm not really all that familiar with the Dark Energy line, so those kinds of sounds coming out of Paiste cymbals really took me by surprise, but in a good way. I think they're beautiful and the...

Re: Help with rims mounts + stuff

I also use a Mapex tom on a 10.5mm knurled L-rod and haven't had any issues with it feeling flimsy or that it could twist.

Re: Why do the wooden hoops on this snare have flat straight sections?

The flat sections also allow you to position drums a little closer together, granted that's more helpful on toms than a snare, but a little leg clearance wouldn't hurt either.

Re: Catalina vs Concept vs Mydentity vs ???

Agreed. When dealing with kits in this price range most of the difference is in the finish and the logo on the drum. And in many cases they are literally made in the same factory.

If you like...

Re: Tuning woes

I guess everyone's perception is a bit different but I routinely tune my bottom snare heads to the neighborhood of G# or A (415 - 440 hz) and that really doesn't seem particularly high to me.

Re: Going retro!

I dig it! I like the idea of retro logos, and the standard Pearl logo is so common it's neat to see someone shake things up a bit.

Re: Jazz Snare Tuning

I agree that there is no "one" tuning for anything. I've heard great players that tuned high or low in every genre there is.

For the snare specifically I'd go medium or higher for the...

Re: 12db Ear Protection?

I use Earasers, which also reduce by a small amount of db, and I find they work well to take the edge off without making everything sound completely unnatural.

Re: 12x10 Tom

With my Ludwig set I use either a 12x11" or a 13x12", and I really like the sound of them. I feel like I get just a little more sustain compared to the FAST-size toms on my Mapex kit.

Re: That Tama Rockstar snare for 50 bucks

I have one of the older black nickel-plated Rockstars, and it sounds amazing.

It's a great sounding drum and it's also well built and has great hardware on it. Tama really knows how to build a...

Re: Dry heads for ludwig blackrolite acrolite snare?

Good question. If you've already got a metal shell snare and like a really dry sound, why not consider a wood shelled second snare?

To me it seems to defeat the purpose of getting a metal shell...

Re: Sold my stage customs, looking for mid range maple kit

Both the Sonor 3005 and Mapex Meridian Maple are made in the same factory and are pretty similar overall. I own a Meridian Birch and I've played a Force 3005 (or maybe it was a 3007, I'm not savvy...

Re: ddrum journeyman snare drum

I agree with Larry, those lugs are especially funky (and plastic?) and that tension rod splay is really bad.

Interstate Music has the 13x6 Mapex MPX maple for $99 if you want a cheap snare in a...

Re: Am I a freak for not liking virgin bass drums?

Well, maybe I'm the freak because I prefer a Pearl tom mount on my bass drum. I use the second hole for my ride cymbal so that's one less piece of hardware to have to place.

Sure, the Pearl...

Re: Am I a freak for not liking virgin bass drums?

Not a freak at all.

I'd also rather put a tom on the bass drum than fly it off of a cymbal stand.

Working out the stand placement/weight distribution and getting both the tom and cymbal in...

Re: 15" snares

To me that's the only real issue with 15" snares; head choices.

If you like fairly straightforward one or two-ply coated heads you have pretty much unlimited options, but many specialty snare...

I'm not in the market for one, but I think that's a nice badge, and I'm glad to see them celebrate the milestone.

Re: How do you measure a snare for a snare bag?

Bags are sized by the drum they're intended to fit over, so you buy based on the shell size, not the actual overall dimensions.

Re: Ludwig Brass Supra

Street price on a new COB is a little over $600, and if you can find a B-stock those run about $500, so I think $400 for a used COB is good if it's in nice condition.

Ludwig snares have taken off...
