Re: Gavin Harrison here!

Hi Gavin,

Thanks for your wonderful clinic at Lone Star last night. It was well worth the drive - I think everyone really appreciated how in depth you are with your answers. I hope it was a good...

Re: practicing my footing without a bass pedal

Why don't you bring your pedal home with you? Just because you keep your kit at the practice space doesn't mean the whole kit has to stay there - a pedal is easy to bring back and forth.

There are...

Re: Do you hit your ride at eye level or much lower?

I love his playing with Battles but still cringe every time I see that setup. I just don't understand his reasoning, I guess.

Maybe it started as a psychological thing to get him to use the...

Re: Gavin Harrison here!

Fair enough. Personally, I started my musical experiences with classical percussion, so I suppose it's not surprising that I default to that background when looking at popular music. But by all means...

Re: Gavin Harrison here!

Yes, but I think if you would have to write every note of a song in triplets, it's not the best time signature to use (eg trying to write Time Flies in 4/4). A classical composer would never do that...

Re: Gavin Harrison here!

He actually starts out playing quarter notes and then moves to dotted eighths (assuming you hear that part in 12/8 like I do). No matter what he is not halving the value.

Re: Gavin Harrison here!

You may get lucky; Lazarus seems to be one of Steve's favorites as well and was played in Dallas at the gig I saw. For anyone interested here's the full setlist:

The Incident
[intermission]
The...

Re: Pirating, us and the future.

Do you think all music and instructional material should be free?
No. I think people just got the idea that with CDs and Vinyl (and DVDs) they were paying for the plastic, not the music.

Do you...

Re: Confusing the upbeat w/ the downbeat

I always have this problem with the Nine Inch Nails song, Survivalism. I can hear the intro and choruses correctly, with bass on downbeats/snare on ups, but when the vocals come in for the verses...

Re: Drums sounds from things that aren't drums.

Seconded. Turn them upside down and they make for a great hand drum; lots of different sounds available. I recommend you get one without the handle in the side.

Re: Recording

It doesn't sound like this is your problem, but just in case: I got that same error message occasionally and couldn't figure out why for the longest time. Then I realized Audacity just refused to...

Re: Replacing a Snare Throw Off?

Also, don't keep that duct tape in contact with the shell! It will melt on and you'll never get all the residue off.

Re: Gavin Harrison here!

Thanks for all your answers Gavin - I'm especially glad to hear that the extra Incident tracks will see release together - I much prefer that to the "Deadwing method." It's also good to hear that...

Re: Gavin Harrison here!

Gavin, I'm excited to hear about The Incident - can't wait until September. And I have a few questions for you about it:
I get the impression from the video and the press releases that this album...

Re: who does your favorite drum solo?

Not a huge fan of drum solos myself but I'd have to say Moby Dick for sure... It goes way past "solo" for me and is really just a song with only Bonham playing.

Re: How to Write for Drums

Yep, those are the type of rain sticks I was thinking of.

For brushes, just write "brushes" or "with brushes" above the start of the brush section, and "sticks" when it changes back. No need to...

Re: How to Write for Drums

Okay, here goes:

Various drums: I like to keep all the percussion on a 5 line staff. Standard form would be to put snare drum on the C space (if this were treble clef), bass drum as F, and cymbals...

Re: Flams

Break it down to each hand. In alternating flams, that leaves you with straight eighth notes, accent/tap/accent/tap etc. Practice that on each hand, then bring them together.

Re: How do you shorten the sound of your cymbals?

Personally I'd be wary of any kind of tape on my cymbals over a long period of time, and I don't suggest tightening your cymbals down on firm felts - that will certainly shorten the sustain, but it...

Re: Gavin Harrison here!

Sorry to interrupt, but I have a practice method that might help you out (and anyone else on this thread). When you're playing along with your met, it's usually set on quarters or eighths. Start...

Re: What song are you playing on drums?

Pat Metheny - First Circle

It's somewhat of a change for me, I was feeling the need for something to break me out of a rut.

Also Radiohead - 15 Step and 65daysofstatic - Welcome To The Times a...

Re: For all you keyboard percussionists

It's a matter of convenience, situation and musicality. Generally picking a value that feels and sounds good is best, although for instance in a solo if you're heavily phrasing a section, varying...
