Re: Examples of where highly technical playing works

There is certainly a stigma where the more complex the drum parts are the more they get viewed as being for the sake of complexity and not musicality. Guitarists get the same thing where any attempt...

Re: How many forms of Metal are there?

It has been around for a while, but much early metal is considered rock by todays standards.

Jazz has been around far longer and if you've ever been to a jazz forum they still have genre wars.

Examples of where highly technical playing works

Hey guys,

Inspired by a related discussion in a similar thread I felt inclined to start this up. I know there are tons of flashy drum parts and solos out there but often they are great for what...

Re: How many forms of Metal are there?

The biggest issue with classifying metal is that it's a young genre with musicians constantly pushing the boundaries of what is and isn't metal

I could easily link a dozen songs that have...

Re: Name a song in which the drummer NEVER played for the song

Yeah... it has some incredibly complex sections.

I was curious who the drummer was to actually manage to pull that off and it turns out it's Léo Margarit, former Montpellier National Philharmonic...

Re: Name a song in which the drummer NEVER played for the song

I understand what you're saying completely, that was my first reaction entirely, but there are certain sections of the song where it just feels like the band are playing for the drummer and without...

Re: Name a song in which the drummer NEVER played for the song

This is an interesting one,

http://youtu.be/XaPTH4O9sSY

Originally I thought the drumming was too flamboyant because it drew me away from the melody completely, now I'm convinced that it...

Re: 13" vs 14" Hats?

I think the most important question is really what you want to use them for,

I saw a comment that you wouldn't use 13 for metal but higher pitches often cut through a low mix the best and metal...

Re: I played my best gig ever.

Sounds awesome,

There is nothing better for a musician than to feel like their music is valued and has an impact.

Most everyone plays for the love it, it's nice when that love is mutual.

Re: Is it good practice to disengage snares?

I always heard that it is a good practise to disengage the wires. I don't bother but I can't see how it would hurt/help them anymore than just leaving them on.

Re: Favorite rudiments for application for the drumset?

I love doing paradiddles between my feet and hands, I try not to stick to any one kind of fill though, I find that gets old fast.

Re: wikiloops wants you! anyone got a beat to share?

I suppose it's just a case of investing what you think it's worth. As I said, I wouldn't consider putting anything up I'm hoping to record, irrelevant of money, but from a community point of view it...

Re: Jon Theodore

I absolutely love tapping along to his beats in One Day As A Lion, I adore that collaboration with Zac De La Rocha.

Re: wikiloops wants you! anyone got a beat to share?

Your name Dick is rather phallic, he was making an immature joke.

Re: wikiloops wants you! anyone got a beat to share?

Seems like it could be fun from a community side of things, I'd be reluctant to invest too much of myself in it though.

Same reasons as the others, I'd rather not give my best creations away.

Re: Lead Singer's Ego

Singers often have great egos but it kind of sounds like you are not really gelling with the band. You said you've been playing with them for a while and enjoying it, but maybe the direction you're...

Re: Video of Peter Wildoer rehearsing for Dream Theater audition

I'll chime in on the ego boosting band wagon with my two cents and say that was utterly fantastic.

I honestly mean it, I am not being snide, you are a wonderful musician Peter, I'll be looking out...

Re: No More Bias

I congratulate you for looking around, I really should do that more myself.

I personally have no issues with multiple different brands of drums, I just find it hard to mix and match and still get...

Re: How do you kick?

I have my throne quite high, so my heels do not rest on the ground naturally how I sit.

I also keep the beater against the head of the drum between kicks, so my foot isn't hovering in an awkward...

Re: How do you kick?

I have a 14 kick with a standard head, it sounds like an angry floor tom being whacked with a mallet. I like that though, and it's easy to transport, plus if it is triggered it hardly matters what it...

Re: How do you kick?

A couple of interesting responses so far,

I play heel up but I don't feel like I bury the kick, usually I just feather it. The kit is untriggered but I have wooden beaters and tight heads, so...

How do you kick?

With a lot of different techniques, many pioneered by members of these forums I'm just wondering which one most people use for single/double kicks.

Personally I lead heel up with my left foot,...

Re: About To Order a Metronome

I have a wind up one, not sure what the brand is but it's a high quality one not made specifically for drums and quite old. It's all clockwork not electric, pretty cool but it doesn't do any of those...
