Re: Rack Toms - sizes & mounted off the kick or not?

Interval. A perfect fourth (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Perfect_fourth) is ideal, but a Major 3rd (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Major_third) is nice too. Anything smaller than a Minor 3rd...

Re: HuH?

I don't think Premier made anything but 14" toms at the time. They were just tuned to different pitches. You can make a 14" drum sound high (snare) or low (floor tom).

Re: Rack Toms - sizes & mounted off the kick or not?

For single mounted tom, I would go with 12". 8" deep is fine, but 9" works well too.

Re: Rack Toms Angled or Flat

Who cares what anyone else does? Set your drums up so that the angle is conducive to hitting them with your stick at the appropriate angle for you. Everyone has a slightly (or majorly) different...

Re: Test Driving Some New Audio Equipment.....suggestions welcome!

Well, you obviously have to spin Steely Dan's Goucho (http://amzn.to/2EW1BV7) as well as Alan Parson's Tales Of Mystery & Imagination (http://amzn.to/2EYLJNz).

Re: Catalina club - Impressed!

I had a set a few years ago. They sounded okay once you put decent heads on them. I think there are better options at similar price points though.

Re: Improvising fills

I've heard a lot of music in my life. I can probably count on my ten fingers the times I've heard true improvisation, in the sense that the musician was playing something they had truly never played...

Re: Improvising fills

That takes zero skill.

What takes skill is improvisation that is musical and that sounds composed, and that others find enjoyable to listen to.

Big difference.

Truly playing something...

Re: Where Do You Position Your Beater

Never in the center. Too little rebound, and kind of a dead sound there.

That really depends on the finish you order, and what the manufacturer has in stock. Generally, they're made to order (for the higher end lines anyway). If you order a finish that is somewhat off the...
