Re: Rock and roll....over?

Our info re: popularity of music genres comes from organizations whos primary focus is profit taking.

I don't think we can rely on that info to say what really IS most popular...just...

Re: The Bass Pedal: Taking our jobs away

I think I'll write an app that observes musical performance...that way we can retire the need for an audience...unless you are simply trying to make money....then an audience might be nice.

Re: Rock Gigs Not Very Rock Anymore?

Any conclusion would require statistically significant quantified observations...

No 2 bands have the same audience environment.

No 2 gigs by a band have the same audience environment.

Abusive behavior on either the student or teachers part is bad teaching/learning theory.

Abusive behavior on either a band leader or band members part is bad business theory.

Re: Electronic Drums to Acoustic

I did much the same in the latter 90's.

Took me about a year to get truly comfortable again on an acoustic set.

Re: You won't believe what Andy did

What a great time that sounds like!

Andy, how much did you charge Larry for that house-call? ; )

Re: Acoustic Drums VS Electronic Drum Kits

E-kit is no guarantee that neighbors wont complain.

I had complaints when playing my e-kit in apartment. The noise of the strike on the pad/pedal on the bass pad was loud enough to hear.\

Re: What if you unwittingly stole someones gig?

If the drummer you are asked to replace gives you substantial referrals/fill-ins and you cant live without them, then decline.

If its a casual relationship with the drummer to be replaced and you...

Re: The worst gig of my life

Another way to say 'infinity flexible' is 'lacking internal integrity'.

Get your gigs contracted...refuse drum equipment share riders....otherwise your work on the music can be for not.

Re: Peart - would you hang out with him?

kinda catch 22...

How would I know unless I met him?

Remember...everything you have read or seen is part of his profession as an entertainer. I don't believe we could truly know who he is...

Re: RUSH retirement rumor

I'd go see them in Vegas...would be great if they made their show stationary...we'd go see 'em....and it would be less wear/tear/discomfort for them.

Maybe 2 shows a month...keep writing so there...

Re: Bands and tempo arguments

Its a rare musician that is satisfying to play with who can't keep time for themselves, in my opinion.

I suggest continually trying new methods in your composition methods to help avoid getting stale.

Re: Lady Gaga on the Oscars.

I think the support given to music acts by labels in the removed past provided more than just time for musical development...it provided time for personal development.

Gaga's limited exposure to...

Re: Are there fewer demands for a drummer now, than before?

I think the observation that 'being a drummer is not the same as being a producer' might be helpful here.

...or an engineer.

Producing and engineering is more complex now - giving the pay-off...

Re: Bands and tempo arguments

I am really glad to see this truth being said more frequently.

Most of the musicians stating drummers hold responsibility for 'keeping time' are simply trying to create a dominance dynamic that...

Re: How many times have you been asked...

The time where I let another use my drum equipment like that I ended up having to replace most of the heads.

I don't rent out my equipment.

Re: Help! Left hand doubles in jazz comping

Practice moving an accent around each of the 3 notes in all possible combinations of a triplet when playing the triplet with one hand is helpful in later dropping the 'un-accented' note.

Re: Do you own (or want to own) both acoustic and electric kits?

I have yet to find a quiet yet faithful reproduction of a drum set that does not create bad habits when used extensively.

True sound insulation is a time and $ consumer...and renting makes it...

I switched to this type of config back in 1995(symmetric)...I highly recommend folks give it a try
