Re: Thoughts on super fast foot speed

I'm also a fan of playing simple where simple will do.

Also, that George Kollias song vs Diepold's cover of a Nile track are totally different - if you think they sound the same then you're not...

Re: Thoughts on super fast foot speed

Well in fairness, I actually kind of agree with you there. I actually dislike almost all metal for the same reasons. But I dislike a lot of music for those reasons so it's kind of a moot point :). ...

Re: Thoughts on super fast foot speed

No... Just... No... Not gonna happen. As much people try to say otherwise, there is a groove and a feel good metal drummers have that there is no WAY possible to duplicate with a machine.

EDIT:...

Re: Thoughts on super fast foot speed

Don't forget triggers are used for clarity as much as volume at high speeds, once you get past a certain speed there is less definition and attack that will cut through with just a mic.

Re: What is your main struggle?

Motivation to learn new things.

After 18+ years playing, most of the time in the practice room all I want to do is jam along to music. I'm rarely motivated to hit the books - not because there's...

Re: Matched Grip vs. Traditional Grip: Pro's and Con's?

Man, that's not really a good comparison. Someone who can drive an auto doesn't necessarily have the skill to drive a manual, but ANYONE who can drive a manual definitely has the skill to drive an...

Re: Matched Grip vs. Traditional Grip: Pro's and Con's?

Whoops, I didn't notice the thread necromancy... this one definitely needs to stay dead!

Re: Matched Grip vs. Traditional Grip: Pro's and Con's?

A five-page discussion on trad vs. matched... Sigh.

As someone who has learned and performed both in live and practice settings, matched is definitely better.

It is easier, kit set-up is...

Re: What method of drum video critiquing do you go by?

No, those singers' problems stem from family and friends who lie to them and tell them they're great. Or an exaggerated sense of talent. I know personally that I can hit the right notes but I also...

Re: Thoughts on super fast foot speed

I'm curious as to what the underlying cause for your back pain is as well.

Does it stem from an injury? If not, then it's quite possible it's due to muscular imbalances and as Jeff suggested,...

Re: How to get better snare sound ?

In my experience, a lot of drummers spend too much time thinking their drums should sound like studio recordings, when in reality an acoustic kit does not sound that way at all.

Once you get used...

Re: Thoughts on super fast foot speed

"Curtain" techniques? Hah.

If you want to play death metal at 260+ bpm and are willing to put the work in, why should you NOT practice a technique such as heel-toe? Or develop incredibly fast...

Re: Thoughts on super fast foot speed

On the subject of heel-toe, I don't believe that it is possible to gain perfectly even-sounding strokes at high speeds. But with that said, I have almost never heard heel-toe played at high speeds...

Re: Instructional books....hard copy or eBook??

Wow, and here I was thinking *I* was the only person left who still buys CDs!

That being said, if I can get an option for FLAC or WAV, and it was cheaper, I'd probably go that way... Or if I can...

Re: Why bother with books?

Out of the list I gave, I would actually recommend Sticking Patterns as being an essential part of every drummer's book collection, and something to have many, many hours put into over many years. ...

Buy, practice, and thoroughly learn the content in all of these books, and then give us your opinion on the content available and the capacity for learning present in books.

Re: Question for You Open-handed Drummers

It has the advantage of assisting to improve in your coordination and dexterity with your weaker hand by using it to lead on the hihats, but also frees up your right hand to move around the kit a lot...

If you start watching from about 2:25 you can see one of the other band members speaking into a microphone. They may or may not be using a click, but I'd definitely suggest the band may be receiving...

Re: question for double bass players

While I can't play at that sort of speed, it should be fairly simple to correct.

Starting at 200bpm, alternate bars of 16ths with both feet and 8ths with a single foot, eg:

Re: Jazz Drumming, and its benefits for rock

It would have been rude for me not to reply to the statement directed at me.

Your logic fails. And now my work here is done.

Re: Jazz Drumming, and its benefits for rock

In my experience, it makes no difference. So I stopped caring a long time ago. Spend 5 minutes reading Youtube comments and you will feel the same way :)

Then you can classify them as either stupid and/or ignorant and ignore them anyway :).

I actually looked at John's profile and saw that he claims to be a retired radio broadcaster. So he's used...
