Re: Playing Live With a Metronome

The time fluctuation I'm talking about is so subtle you can't really notice it unless you put a click up against it. I run into this all the time when checking meters for cover tunes.. you think...

Re: Playing Live With a Metronome

If you are forced to play to backing tracks live with a click.. it has to be loud enough to hear; usually with headphones. Otherwise, if you get out of sync with the track .. it's a total stage/band...

Re: Stage Etiquette

Ditto that - I've never touched a sound engineers mics in my life.. other than repointing a mic if it inadvertantly falls off kilter.. but for tear down.. best to get your stuff out of the way (what...

Re: Stage Etiquette

1+ Yes.. I get panicked if an army of well meaning volunteers starts moving my stuff. Easy to lose track of things.. and I have had equipment disappear in those situations (like some cymbals stands...

Re: BPM question

I tend to count them based on where the 2 and 4 (the backbeat) fall into place. Find the pulse of the tune..I have played that one in the past counting it at ~215.. it moves!

Re: Beginner looking for advice

Stick Control by Stone is still a standard book in most drummers library.. and most don't get past the first page.. as there are enough exercises on the first page to last a lifetime. Great for hand...

Re: Stage Etiquette

DOn't even ask if you can play my kit.. or share my kit with other bands. I get tired of saying NO.. but I still get asked from time to time.. sometimes by sound guys looking for an easy way out, or...

Re: easiest quick and dirty multi track recording?

A midi keyboard plugged into a laptop will get you 80% there. Bass, drums, keys, brass parts can be laid down quickly.. record guitar with a mic on it or with a DI box (clean but loses the amp...

Re: What is your drum setup pet peeve?

- that's another reason why I mount 2 toms on a separate double-spike stand just to the side of my kick. I can get the power toms down nice and low - and at the same time, the kick and toms sound...

Re: What is your drum setup pet peeve?

Racks (although efficient) are just plain U-g-l-y.
But my biggest peeve is:

I hate seeing a band where the drummer is hiding behind a wall of toms and cymbals..

One of the most frustrating...

Re: Which wood type to go with

As stated birch and maple are common.. I prefer birch shells as they project the sound really well and they are known for their tonal qualities. (one reason why Yamaha Recording Customs were so...

Re: Buddy Rich Playing Matched Grip!

[QUOTE=MattRitter;1352221] In a 2002 master class, Jim jokingly uses the term "the scoliosis kids" when referring to people who use traditional grip on a flat snare"

Exactly.. it wasn't designed...

Re: Buddy Rich Playing Matched Grip!

Jim Chapin was one of the all time 'grandmasters' - I find it hilarious that you think you know more about drum technique than guys like Jim, Buddy, Morello etc.. when you're digging yourself in a...

Re: Buddy Rich Playing Matched Grip!

Seriously? That's your proof? A picture taken out of context of an 80+ year old guy.. he's not even holding the stick with his left hand as he's demonstrating a point. Have you looked at any 80 year...

Re: Buddy Rich Playing Matched Grip!

Cripes it's a clone.. Obviously you just don't know how traditional grip works or how it's supposed to be played... A good trad player can play as soft as a whisper or as loud as anyone could...

Re: Successful Songs in Set?

Those are some great setlists.. my only addition would be;

If you want to get gigs.. entertain the audience - put on a show; and choose material that is familiar and danceable... to the point...

Re: Buddy Rich Playing Matched Grip!

Damn - this is fun.. like swatting flies!

I suggest you get your eyes checked.. I see trad players all the time and have never noticed anyof them tilting, hunching or listing.

Sure trad...

Re: Buddy Rich Playing Matched Grip!

It must have been on the interweb, so it must be true haha..

I've seen lot's of matched drummers with horrible posture .. so it must be because they are using matched grip :) Really.. one of the...

Re: Buddy Rich Playing Matched Grip!

Haha.. yes it's true - that IS an untrue blanket statement!

.. anyone that has poor posture does not get it from playing trad.. they get it because they have poor posture!

Also; although I play...

Re: What's your latest purchase?

.. a pair of barely used Paiste Signature Sound Edge 15" Hi-hats.

I have another pair of 15" Zildigan hats, but found they didn't have enough bite for a loud rock band.. better for blues and...

Tempus is awesome.

I was playing with one of my 4 bands, which practices in a small basement room - and the volume in this classic rock type band can sometimes build up.. to the point where the 13"x6" Black Panther...

Re: How do you cue your live tempos at the gig?

Yes.. whatever works for you.
Absolutely nothing wrong with using a device.. for practicing, rehearsals, or whatever.. if you're thrown into a gig and you aren't familiar with the tunes.. it can...
