Re: Trying out the Dunnett R4-L strainer

I put a Tama Linear Drive on my old COB, what a fantastic strainer that was. Expensive (about $100 for strainer & matching adjustable butt) but relatively low-mass, extremely easy & nice to operate,...

Re: The Snare Wires General Info Thread

That's the video I was just about to post. On my first pass, I heard very little difference between most of the sets (though the cable / wire types are pretty easily heard as they sound much more...

Re: Gurus played hard!

Took a lesson (in a real seedy behind-venue alley) from him when he was touring in Texas. 'Twas very insightful!

I've seen he was building a stave snare recently I assume he was communicating...

Re: Guitar Center's used inventory

Shipping wasn't too bad for me. I think shipping & tax combined on a $99 used cymbal I bought from them was around $33, which is reasonable to me. They certainly do not mark down their used item...

Re: So should you never bounce doubles?

You gotta bounce! It's possible to just muscle out doubles disregarding rebound but that's not reasonable for higher tempos (it does offer its own benefits though).

Just try to keep your pinkies...

Re: Gurus played hard!

Hey, I know Jay!

Sounds appropriate for that application ;) pretty thick Meinl crash he's playing on his right there.

Re: microphone clips on toms

I have used some "claw-type" mic clips in the past that barely were able to grab on to my S-Hoops (which are much wider flanged than Sonic Savers). I also have a cheaper kind of clip that would never...

Re: tom mounts on cymbal stands

You don't even need to put a leg under the tom if you're only hanging one. Most mid-to-heavy weight stands are plenty heavy enough to stand up on their own, even with that weight hanging off. There's...

Re: Is this a good drum set (size) for jazz?

I really disliked it on my bass drum... vastly reduced lows compared to a regular PS3. My bass drum is a bit unconventional, though...

Re: Looking for Doubble Bass Exercises (Matt Garstka)

I found Hannes Grossman's DVD about this helpful.

Just remember to start slow and work your way up sloooooowly.

Re: Is this a good drum set (size) for jazz?

You can do whatever you want... but I wouldn't recommend a Black Dot PS3, really, they're a little esoteric in sound. Pick whatever kind you want for the resonant (audience-facing) side and get a...

Re: SJC Drums and "The Profit" TV Show

Just an FYI, they've put in an entirely new site since I last posted. Hilarious! It's kind of badly organized but if you click on the "Shop Drums & Accessories" link on the main page, you'll find the...

Re: SJC Drums and "The Profit" TV Show

The derogatory perception of "keller boutiques" on this forum isn't mainly for lack of effort on their part. I think most of our response threads to kids asking about SJC include mention of their...

Re: Is this a good drum set (size) for jazz?

Don't worry about the sizes too much, a 20" bass drum is well within mainstream jazz usage. 18"s are the other popular size. However, tuning and head selection will play a large role as well. If...

Re: DW Kitbuilder

The Kitbuilder price could be "list price" and not MSRP, which is generally 50-60% off list in percussion sales. However, most of what I've seen from a cursory Google search says that the Collector's...

Re: DW Kitbuilder

I wouldn't say they get THAT much cheaper based on what I've heard. Haven't heard of anybody ordering through the "kitbuilder" either. I'll just say my bit and be done with it: you can get something...

Re: question for double bass players

That's my experience too. Doing a single foot, I feel like I'm putting more into each stroke, whereas with two feet, I feel like I'm just gliding on the top of the pedal and producing the same volume...

Re: Keeping stands/drums in the same position

Also, duct tape "sockets" on your carpet so you know roughly where to put your stand bases are a godsend. I like the Tama MCA63EN boom attachment because you can take out the boom easily and leave...

Re: NDD: New Kit Day Tama Starclassic Performers B/B, No more buyers remorse

That's about exactly where I have mine, haha. I find that setup very appealing wonder why? ;)

Re: Creating A Logo

Don't ask anybody you're not great friends with to do it for free, that's what I say!

If it's going to involve images & not just text, you'll probably have the best luck going to a pro...

Re: NDD: New Kit Day Tama Starclassic Performers B/B, No more buyers remorse

Gorgeous. What a looker. And now you have quite an efficient snare collection too!

Speaking from personal experience I would definitely have those toms lower to the bass drum, and the cymbals...

Re: How to you construct your parts?

With basic rock stuff, I generally can feel what kind of groove would work best and try to add flourishes based on where the accents are in the other parts. Often I'll pick one little fill concept...

Re: Blake Richardson + Tomas Haake + Elliot Hoffman

Jay plays for Tesseract. Anup has a bunch of solo djent albums but also plays with Intervals and Skyharbor, as well as a couple other assorted projects. Obviously Garstka plays with Animals as...

Re: Blake Richardson + Tomas Haake + Elliot Hoffman

I recommend looking at various drum videos of them (Postones and Sastry) playing on youtube. Anup has quite a presence there with a lot of playing. Check out his Intervals playthrough videos. Jay has...
