Re: screwed up my first gig

No problems. Clams are part of the process and the pros make them too. With the pros, they are better at recovering or skating past. Dropped sticks are a common problem. Check out Gavin Harrison...

Re: Eric Slick

Awesome drummer and smart, funny guy. His sister Julie is a fearsome bassist and a joy to be around. And their dad is a talented guitarist and walking repository of Beatles songs.

Re: Two Drummers, One Band

Then there is the 2014 version of King Crimson with three drummers, all on the front line. Overkill, arguably. Incredible, most certainly!

Re: What's your take on electronic drum sets?

I have both (Roland TD-9 and Sonor Newport Beech) back to back in my drum cave. During the day when no one really cares about the racket, I'll choose the Sonors every time, no question when I go to...

Re: What songs do you really like the drumming on?

I'll tell you, Jakko at least was not singing flat!

I'll be seeing P@ and Tony later this month at the Stick Men concert. I'll have the opportunity to talk to them so maybe I'll get a feel for...

Re: What songs do you really like the drumming on?

Starless was epic. Jakko did a really nice job with the vocals in the opening section, the build-up in the center section you love was hair-raising, and the blow in the final section was powerful. ...

Re: What songs do you really like the drumming on?

Written by Bill Bruford as I understand it. Just saw the Crim lads perform this. Goosebumps all over!

Re: What songs do you really like the drumming on?

Have you had the chance to see King Crimson on their current tour? Incredible with Mastelotto, Rieflin, and Harrison!

Re: King Crimson drummers solo, Elstree, 2014

Saw The Mighty Crim in Chicago this past Friday evening. No doubt this was the best concert I've seen in years. Just a bunch of old guys (Gavin is the pup at 50) who used lifetimes of experience and...

Re: Upcoming Concerts You Will Be Attending

Bo:

I, too, am disappointed that Adrian is not part of the KC2014 lineup. He is the perfect foil for Fripp and does a great job connecting with the audience, beyond his incredible music making...

King Crimson - 9/26 Chicago (Mastelotto, Harrison, Rieflin)
Stick Men - 10/24 Cleveland (Mastelotto)
Steve Hackett - 12/3 Cleveland (O'Toole)

Re: Old school rock bass drum setup.

The common set-up in the early 70s was to take the reso head and hoop off, one single strip of felt across the batter head right above or below the beater patch or a pillow / blanket resting against...

Re: The Speed Obsession

I think this is an excellent question.

Speed is not my strength so I am in the same position. Someone who either doesn't have speed or has it and doesn't feel the need to use it is Steve...

Re: The Speed Obsession

We had an interesting (to me at least!) discussion related to this topic at a music camp I attended last month. A small group of us, mostly older, campers were sitting and having a nice chat with...

Re: Producers killed instrumentalists

I like Robert Fripp's analogy along the same lines when he asks "Would you rather have a 'hot date' (live performance) or a 'love letter' (recording of said performance)?".

Re: Producers killed instrumentalists

This is the most telling statement right there. 100% of the pop music I have been subjected to could (if it wasn't already) be made using drum tracks from Superior Drummer and that ilk and...

Re: Worst song ever

Even Terry Kath didn't think much of this song. I saw them in concert about 1970 and when they played this, Terry held one of the then popular "laughing bags" up to the microphone to provide backing...

Thanks Bruce!

I am looking forward to seeing this three and their Crim bandmates on the upcoming tour. P@ said it took a little planning among he, Gavin, and Bill to make certain they gave each...

Re: Help with my technique and mental pulse

There is tremendous value in using a metronome for practicing and I'll bet you used one in your violin wrangling days. Over time, the pulse is internalized and you'll have a better innate feel for...

Re: Liveliness in playing

Working with Tobis Ralph and Pat Mastelotto last week was a great study in contrast.

Watching Pat play is like watching Animal in the Muppets. He is all over the kit, big motions, great groove /...

Re: Annoying Sounds

Gotta say Uncle Larry that's the best advice I've seen in a very long time. Thanks!
