Re: How many drum kits have you owned?

3 total:

I own 2 of them currently.

My first was a CB700 that I bought back around 82.
12, 13, 14, ride toms, 16 floor, 22 bass, 6x14 metal snare. I had Zildjians, 14" new beats, 18" medium...

Re: 12x8 or 13x9 for single rack tom??

Based on what you provided about the 9x12 tom, I'd say go with the 9x13 for this kit. You can get a fairly wide variety of tones based on head choices, both reso, and batter, depending on what you...

Re: The ubiquity of smaller kits

This is my thought process as I get back playing. I still respect talented people who opt to go big, especially if they really have a thought process behind why they have what they have. However,...

Re: Favorite floor tom size and why?

Depends, on a few variables such as high tom, kick, my mood, heads in use, what I've been listening to, day of the week, whether I'm having Bourbon, or beer that day, if I saw my skinny hot neighbor...

Re: 12x8 or 13x9 for single rack tom??

Why not try a 12x9? A kit I just picked up has that and it is interesting.

Re: New Gretsch 3 ply Broadkaster line

I'm thinking about using a rail consellette on a new virgin 16x22 shell.

I'd like to hear peoples likes and dislikes of them.

Cat maple
16x16 round badge new satin cherry burst orphaned shell

Re: THE CLASSIFIEDS - For Sale / Wanted

Wanted

Gretsch Renown 14, or 16 floor tom in Satin Walnut Burst. A satin Walnut would probably work as well.

I believe this was a 2012 color offering.

Re: Does your gear HAVE to be the same brand or do you mix/match?

I'm wanting to add a 16x20 kick into my Renown 57 kit jazz kit. I've managed to pick up a 8x10, and a 16x16 that match, but a 20" kick was not made for this kit. There's a matching 22" kick available...

Re: Can't decide on a rack tom size for a jazz kit

I like both sizes, and have leaned towards the 10 lately. I have both an 8x10, and 8x12 high tom with a 14x14 floor, and a 16x16 showing up next week.

If I were custom ordering I'd get both to...

Re: One or two mids toms?

I like the 1 up, and 1 or 2 down setup. Expanding on that I've become more intrigued with what tom sizes I want to hear in a 1 up/down setup.

I'm digging 20" bass drums lately with various tom...

Re: Gretsch Renown '57s Jazz Bop Shell Packs Now Deep Discounted?

Figured I'd just dig this old thing out instead of starting a new thread.

Scored a correct matching 10" tom for my BOP kit. The harder aspect is getting an extra bass drum in 20" size since that...

Re: A lesson for all newbies

I love it!!

There was a thread here in the archives that asked, why do some of you play such small kits? It's easy to hide behind a wall of toms, I talked about this with my 16yr old daughter...

Re: Gretsch Renown '57s Jazz Bop Shell Packs Now Deep Discounted?

The cymbals do in fact work well together.

Totally enjoying this kit. There's nothing wrong with the stock heads as supplied, but there are other options. The stock heads tuned up well and...

Re: About to order some Bonham sized Ludwigs Classic Maples. Got questions.

If I'm not mistaken, and correct me if I'm wrong, but I think on the 1st album it is a smaller BD. I think the kit is 22" BD, 13"rt, 16" 18"ft.

My next kit will be a Bonham kit but it will be a...

Re: John Bonham 1970 Royal Albert Hall Moby Dick

Been going back to re read past discussions on Bonham and found this thread. For myself the tone of his drums is just wicked. John Paul Jones Jazz bass tone is great as well.

My kids sometimes...

Re: Gretsch Renown '57s Jazz Bop Shell Packs Now Deep Discounted?

Due to life getting in the way, my drums have been sitting neatly in a closet the last year. Pulled them out this week and they served as a reminder as to why I bought another drum kit in the 1st...

Re: Ultimate Drumset!!

Well, that depends on a few different factors. I have the same issue with Bass's. One bass just does not do it for all situations. Recently I let my Geddy sig jazz bass go on a trade for some...

Re: Gretsch Renown '57s Jazz Bop Shell Packs Now Deep Discounted?

Do you think that a Vintage E head would give you the bottom you are looking for? There was a youtube vid of some Renowns with basically A's on the 12, and E's on the 14.

I'll see if I can find...

Re: Gretsch Renown '57s Jazz Bop Shell Packs Now Deep Discounted?

I have also thought of doing the same with the hardware. It would only cost a couple of bucks to do so. Another way to bolt the two halves together is to cut a wooden shim, that can be bolted in...

Re: Gretsch Renown '57s Jazz Bop Shell Packs Now Deep Discounted?

The pedal is a Gibralter 4611. The beater is a new felt beater, not the one that comes with the pedal.

Re: Gretsch Renown '57s Jazz Bop Shell Packs Now Deep Discounted?

Yes, the drum is level. It was just about the distance of the pedal to the hoop.

The riser worked without installing any spacers between the two halves, but the beater angle was just a bit severe....

Re: Gretsch Renown '57s Jazz Bop Shell Packs Now Deep Discounted?

First off, congrats on tke kit.
What is your concern with getting the 12" tom to tune?

I've found no issue with getting the small tom to sound good even with the stock heads. I will be...

Re: Finishing the insides of shells

Another process that I used to hear about was Vibrafiying drum shells. Basically the shells were lined with a thin layer of fiberglass.
