It also looks to me like the screws are actually bent? If you aren't pulling straight down on the head you'll never get it to sound right.

Yep I'm in the DW Mag throw off camp. Came on my performance series kit and love the way it works. Simple not overly heavy, also like the 3 position butt plate too.

Is this an open basement? No actual room you are playing in? Is the basement finished with drywall? I'd lay odds it's not just the ceiling, it's also the stairs. A drop ceiling will do very little...

Get your teacher to buy some new heads for them, may be surprised what they sound like. Old doesn't necessarily mean bad, they could be incredible sounding kits if tuned up properly with new heads....
