Re: Contrats To Bermuda!

Been listening to Al since his first album. Couldn't happen to a better group. Much deserved!

Re: The old Pearl Exports??

I still play my '92 Export Pro often. No ISS (thankfully) and it has the birch inner ply and a shallower bass drum (22x16). The only thing that sucks about it is the metal bass drum hoops. They...

Re: bass drum depth

I would if there were more options of shallower bass drum sizes! Part of the problem is almost every manufacturer has jumped on this silly bandwagon and leave very little in the way of shallow bass...

Re: SQ2 Birch (shell thickness… need your help)

Have to say you were right. Just saw Jojo post on his Facebook feed they're recording a new album and that's the kit he's using.

If anyone wants to hear what a thin shelled SQ2 birch bass drum in...

Re: The best kits we've ever made - Honest Capture videos!

I swear every time I see these vids I'm so impressed by your bass drums. Even the 20x18 (which I normally don't like at that depth) sounds great. The 24x14 Walnut sounds soooo killer. What heads...

Re: The 20" shallower bass drum, not as easy to find as I thought

I looked into this recently as also I wanted a shallower 20" bass drum, but spending over $2,000 on just a bass drum is a bit to steep for me.

I really don't understand why there are so few...

Re: SQ2 Birch (shell thickness… need your help)

That may be one of Jojo's kits, but it's not the main kit he records on. That kit is for other players to come in and play when they record. Check out the following videos of him in the studio...

Re: Do you feel sorry for today's kids?

It also ignores the obvious opportunity. Hip hop and electronica may use drum machines for their beats, but drum machines can't improv and don't have feel.

Look at drummers like Jojo Mayer and...

Re: SQ2 Birch (shell thickness… need your help)

There's a great FAQ compiled at Sonor Museum about SQ2 shell thickness you may want to check out:

http://www.sonormuseum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=15192

Basic takeaways:

Shell thickness...

Re: Do you feel sorry for today's kids?

Wait, so learning how to play dubstep, drum&bass, jungle, et al...new genres that specifically feature drumming at their core, are basic and boring to you?

If you don't like the music that's fine,...

Re: Stupid Newbie Tricks

I know you meant it as a joke, but here's one I tried as an experiment that actually worked. Take a popcorn snare, and reverse the heads (batter head on snare side) and then flip the snare over...

Re: Stupid Newbie Tricks

Many years back I got so dissatisfied with the sound of my hats (they were cheap) that I just decided to reverse them to get ANY kind of different sound. I couldn't believe how much better they...

Re: Deal of a lifetime or ripped off for being gullable

The lugs look like black version of what Sonor uses on their budget kits like the Safari and Martini. Most regular Sonor kits have a gap between the two points of contact on the shell. The budget...

Re: Too smart for my friends?

Music is an art form, it's not a mathematical proof. Hell, I even have a degree in mathematics and I still view it as art.

It seems from your posts that you are really into the technical nuances...

Re: You get what you pay for

I disagree with this (if only because you used an extreme example). I own a $100 snare and a $1,000 snare. The $1k snare sounds infinitely better because it can do things the $100 snare simply...

Re: A new model for record labels?

Look at what Beyonce did with her surprise album release recently. Exclusive to iTunes for a week and she also bought every slot in the rotating banner on the iTunes home page, which is usually...

Re: A new model for record labels?

I think this was proven viable this year when Macklemore & Ryan Lewis won 4 Grammy's. They never signed to any label (their "label" is Macklemore LLC), independently produced and recorded their...

Re: Best Buys from NAMM 2014?

The only "wow" I saw was the 3 ply Gretsch prototype. But that's just a prototype, who knows what it sounds like or if it will even come out.

Re: Possibly one of the best videos I've ever seen...

Obviously a very good set, no doubt. "Best" is a reach though. Vinnie, Gadd, and Weckl at the Buddy Rich memorial concert kills this though, IMHO. That will always be the best drum "shed" to me.

Re: Why Do Bands Have Two Drummers?

Was just going to mention Polica. I saw them live and it's obvious why they have two drummers. The live sound is simply incredible, it's like a wall of sound, just overtakes you. I've never heard...

Re: Race in drumming

Interesting the talk about "white style" vs "black style" drumming, but little discussion about the cultural influence of Latino drummers and their multitude of very distinct styles.

Re: Re-wrapping old Pearl Export

The first one is an early 90's (90-93) Export with birch inner ply. IMHO, these are the best sounding Exports you can get for this reason.
