Re: groove vs chops?

It seems to be the overall belief you can have technique (chops) yet not be able to groove but, you definitely can groove without the chops - all depending on definitions of the terms.

Re: Ginger Bakers Latest

Watching Baker always reminds me of his own philosophy - Some play faster, some play with greater technique but, no one plays like him.

It's true. He has always had his own voice behind the...

Re: Amazing Street Drummer in France

Compared to many other street drummers/bucket drummers I've seen, he had quite an array of toys in there. Kind of a STOMP-thing happening. I enjoyed the atmosphere of the video, too.

Re: Bass vs. drums challenge video - released here first :)

I guess the greatest compliment you can give to something like this is that it ended too soon; wanted to see and hear more. Very enjoyable on various levels.

Re: Scott K Fish: Interviewing Advice from Buddy Rich

I confess I expected to hear something pretty startling but, without an explanation from Buddy I have no idea why the Shadow Wilson performance effected him dramatically enough to claim it was the...

Re: Gary Husband new YouTube channel

Such a unique style and way of phrasing things. Never really could figure it out. I certainly hear the influence of Billy and Tony. Just superb playing.

Just wondering if playing keys influences...

Re: Danny Seraphine

Funny, I tended to find Mitch Mitchell's style distracting with Hendrix, while Seraphine seemed to fit perfectly in his genre. Forty-five years ago and I can still hear his patterns, fills and segues...

Re: What would you consider "true innovations"

Drum racks.

Some of the old jazzers had racks but, the rack as we see it today was a hardware innovation. Took me a long time to succumb but, I have to admit it took away a lot of frustration...

Re: Is this beyond repair?

Just curious. How does the drum sound? Okay?

The picture makes it look like a floor tom, but I don't see any leg brackets so I assume it's a deep tom.

If someone sat on it or stood on it while...

Re: Drilling A Hole In your Thumb

Ain't that the truth. I have more scars on my hands than Walmart has stores.

have also drilled a finger a couple times, once where the pain sent me to my knees. But hey, you cut away the tissue...

Re: Has anyone or famous drummers recorded with these crap drums?

Argent drums.

Like stated above, anything can be made to sound good with today's recording equipment.

In the case of the drums I used, I eventually took them home and renovated them. Black...

Re: 4 piece vs 5 piece kits

Are you speaking of a five pc. by adding another mounted tom, or floor? It really depends on your own style and the music you accompany.

I don't know as it is an 'advantage' but, for me, the...

Re: Focusing on drumming as a profession. Dreaming to reality.

It is a sad reality that it is rare for anyone, not just musicians in general, or drummers in particular, to make a living doing what they love to do. Especially in America where the aspect of...

Re: Musicality

So, if I am exposed to music I do not particularly care for, I will not be able to tell if the drummer has any musicality to his playing?

Not sure that works for me.

Some drummers have great...

Re: Tight Cymbals and odd setups...

I used to just about sit on the floor when younger. I began to sit higher as I noticed it was a lot easier on my legs and feet and it increased ability there for me.

Flat drums are just too far...

Re: Musicality

Musicality > The ability to take the mechanics and techniques of playing a drum set and making it musical, melodic, even harmonic in nature, not just rhythmic.

When I think of musicality on the...

Baker was a big influence on me when I was a kid. But when I think about your three I must admit, as each of them were quite different voices, YOUR voice must have a uniqueness to it from the...

Re: Bearing edges

You used a router once, or a table router? There is a pretty big difference in results. Routers can be wild animals sometimes when the centrifugal force gets going. Tables, though, are pretty tame,...

Re: The big debate: tribute bands - yay or nay!?

I understand tribute bands to exist because the musicians like the music, and people miss the live performance of the music, perhaps because today's music is not filling the gap?

I'd probably go...

Re: Hiromi trio gig report. Simon Phillips, Anthony Jackson

Fabulous review. Loved it. Would love to have seen the concert.

I didn't know Simon had a popcorn snare to his right. Is that new?

Five minutes in on that clip I have never heard anyone use...

Simon is Simon. By that I mean he has a voice which is recognizable. And I hear it with Hiromi. It's an authoritative voice, for sure. When I watch vids of Hiromi with other drummers she seems to...

Re: Very excited!

Hiromi is a force of nature. I can't say Simon is my favorite player with her but he does a nice job with the music. Sometimes I wish he would just cut loose with it. He does his thing, as usual, but...
