Re: Would You Match A Kit To Fit An Audition?

Obviously bring the right gear - # of pieces and the appropriate sizes - from a practicality standpoint. But it's also a signal to the band/artist that you known what you're doing. Don't oversell, or...

Re: Silly branding things that shouldn't matter (but do!)

Don't forget amps, most of which have a suitably visible name/logo plate on the grille, and keyboards with the brand and model screened on the rear edge that faces the audience.

Guitars/basses may...

Re: Making $ playing drums

FYI, that's very good money! Maybe I'll move to Boston... :)

Re: Making $ playing drums

Expenses always dictate what kind of money suffices as "a living." $500/week, while really just an example, is an okay income by most standards. $2000/mo - in cash - is like earning maybe $35,000...

Re: What's your process for coming up with drum grooves for songs?

Also an important point - listen to the vocals if possible. Not so much that you'd necessarily base a part to go with the vocal rhythm, but more about knowing where not to step on a vocal part with a...

Re: What's your process for coming up with drum grooves for songs?

The bass line is a good place to start, you'll either want to lock-in to a point, or play around the rhythm a little. Don't assume that the kick has to duplicate the bass part, although for some...

Re: Blues jam session ... play simple - receive big applause

I've always said, don't treat a jam like an opportunity to cut loose... treat it like an audition. Play what you'd play on a gig. Other players are listening, and some of them need drummers. :)

Re: Ludwig Copper Phonic

As I've stated, the Copper isn't really comparable to a specific Supra, it's got elements of all of them. If I had to say which existing Supra it's most like, I'd have to say a regular Supra, but...

Re: Intersting article on Beats Headphones

7506 (and GK Ultraphones) are the only phones I use at home, in the studio, and on tour.

Re: Turning Pro

The term professional is correctly applied in two ways. One, in the context of doing something as a profession, and two, as said of someone who conducts their self in a professional manner.

Being...

Re: Intersting article on Beats Headphones

There's a reason you don't see them in studios, where sound matters.

Re: Ever seen Stainless steel Supraphonics?

Haven't seen one, but Ludwig admits to having made a few (not sure if they were seamless or not.) As for the magnet test, it won't stick to a brass or Ludalloy (aluminum) shell, and will also not...

Re: How to get better snare sound ?

I like the old original Puresound wires, but not the Blasters. Put some $9 Gibraltar wires on there and that's the first step to an improved, more 'normal' sound.

As for the ring, it depends how...

Re: Do you have your own sound?

Sound? No.

Style? Maybe.

But I do have an approach to sounds and parts that defines me, which is that I strive for the 'right' sounds and parts. While the concept of what's right is highly...

Re: Ludwig Copper Phonic

Looks great, especially the single-flange hoops, classy!

I wonder how long before Ludwig offers the usual Supra options on this? Hammered, die-cast hoops, tube lugs... The lugs really show off the...

Re: Drums ETC June/July edition

Excellent, thank you for the cool magazine!

Interesting that two separate companies used the word 'infinite' in their ads, both on the inside front cover. Good placement, I remember both brands...

Re: How can I make a shallow snare sound deeper

That's the actual 'trick', using an overlay that's almost as large as the drum's diameter. Having it extend to the all-important edge of the batter is part of the key to the sound (think about how...

Re: Click Tracks

In some cases, the songs will sound quite different if played in strict time. Listen to Honky Tonk Woman, and note how radically the tempo speeds up throughout the song, until it's several BPM faster...

Re: Click Tracks

This is commonly referred to as a tempo map, and may be implemented for various reasons, including to make a song feel more natural with (seemingly) imperceptible ebbs & flows. The advantage to that...

Re: Ludwig Copper Phonic

Modern Supras/BB/Bronze all have subtle snare beds, and the CopperPhonic is made to the same specs as its Supra siblings. The only difference is the shell material (and lack of finish) and Ludwig...

Re: Tempo Training Program?

I see such exercises, and chuckle a little to myself. Indeed, if you have an intermittent (or very sparse) click, you will obviously be forced to learn time, although the attention required to do so...

Re: Ludwig Copper Phonic

Hard to imagine a spun metal shell being out of round, unless something happens to it after manufacture. With Ludwig's rolled-over edges on the Supras, it's not easy for those shells to flex.

Re: Achieving Greatness

Influence is certainly an important barometer of greatness, and there's no question that Ringo had a tremendous influence on drummers and would-be drummers, and the brand they purchased in droves....
