Similar but different story for me.

After studying, playing, etc with blazing passion for 40+ years - the candle is now dimly lit for me though I still keep my set up and practice on occasion.

2 isn't necessarily whimpy but it is possible to overblow it and not get anything. It's more common to be biting down preventing it to vibrate which won't generate a tone.
