Re: Who did we open for?

That is great! I hope you're not easily starstruck around great drummers like I am. In a similar situation a couple years ago, it was all I could do not to soil myself.

Re: Hey Joe: Great drumming or overplaying?

That song is a great example of how relative the term "play for the song" can be.

Re: Who has inspired the most to make people play drums?

I don't think it's necessarily true that the answer is subjective based on your generation.

I don't think there has been an event comparable to "Beatles on the Ed Sullivan Show" before or since....

Re: Jan Hammer (?)

Check out Country and Eastern Music, by Jan Hammer and Jerry Goodman. I think Jan plays drums on the entire album. He's a really good drummer. He's ridiculously good for a keyboardist who spends...

Re: Your Moment of Glory

I really have never had a single moment like that. Or maybe I did, but I was so focused on getting it right that I never took time to notice. I think about Larryace's observation about the person...

Re: Gigging Mishaps

Long post warning...

Not sure this is what you're looking for, but...

Some years ago I played a gig subbing for the regular drummer in a band that was playing the Woodward Dream Cruise, a...

Re: Jazz album of the week...

My pleasure! You may be the only person who gets anything useful out of the stuff I post on this board, so I'm happy someone is interested.

Re: Jazz album of the week...

Hey, J-Boogie. I can't remember all the stuff you've checked out, so I may be repeating things you've already heard. But I never run out of albums I love sharing with others. So here's a couple,...

Re: Some band drama

I think it's pretty normal.

Last spring, I was asked to audition for a band and it was really disorganized and sounds like a lot of what you were dealing with. I'm usually a for-hire guy, but a...

Re: Tony Williams

I'm glad you dig Evolution. It kind of gets lost in the shuffle of all those great Blue Notes from 1964 and 1965. It's a fantastic record.

Re: Is it a myth that certain drumming legends have an inimitable 'feel' on the kit?

I can see a really great player copping another drummer's feel on a specific lick or two and fooling most of us. But for a whole album or concert? I'm more skeptical.

Re: So long story short, I'm a bass player now

That's cool, D. I've been studying piano and theory recently and I'm loving it. I don't see it replacing drumming for meóthe intent was to expand my musical vocabulary and help me finish composing...

Re: So long story short, I'm a bass player now

I have nothing of substance to add, but the title of this thread makes me laugh out loud and I can't stop. It's like the punch line to a joke or something.

"How's the drumming going?"
"Long...

Re: So that didn't end well

The whole experience is strange enough that I'd almost wonder if the whole thing was part of some kind of scam to scope out your studio to come back later and burglarize it. That's probably a stretch...

Re: Good news & mini session report.

Man, that is great news. I can't really imagine what that must feel like coming back from the experience you had, but I bet it's a great feeling.

Love the singer loading in photo! Hahahaha.

Re: The sound behind vs. the sound out front - big differences for you?

The severity of the difference varies depending on a lot of variables, especially the room itself. The more time spent trying to get the drums to sound good from the throne, it seems like the worse...

Re: Dave King's Rational Funk ~ thoughts? opinions? comments?

What a difference a few years makes!

I've been watching this series lately and it's maybe the funniest drum-related thing I've ever seen. I can't believe how completely I missed the boat three...

Re: I Just Became a Bosphorus Artist

Congratulations, man!

That has to be a great feeling and a sort of "bucket list" item you can check off on your career list now. Good for you!

Re: Which Gretsch Drum book?

I've only seen the Falzerano book, which I own. Lots of great pics and also stories about the artists who played them back in the day. Some of the stories are from drummers themselves, others are...

Re: Some time grooving

I think how you physically move when you play has a big effect on your timekeeping and feel. I think itís worth paying attention to what movements work for you and to make those movements become...

Re: The jazz ride pattern

What Todd said. I am of the opinion (others may disagree) that it's best to start by learning to emphasize the quarter note pulse. Elvin would often emphasize the skip note, but that was in the...

Re: Jazz drummers: How do you work on soloing?

My approach is to have the melody of the head of the tune in my mind as I play. I can do that alone in a practice room without listening to anyone else. Of course, on the bandstand, you're going to...

Re: The Train Beat

I almost always play the train beat with brushes, and I use it a lot. There are certain tunes that it's just perfect for and nothing else really works.

Re: When the drums drop out

If the drums stop, they have to be able to keep time. That's on them if they can't, not you.

Of course, in reality, you're going to play with people who have poor time and come in at the wrong...
