Re: Sometimes, it all becomes so worthwhile :)

It's a dirty little recording studio secret that many players of many different instruments will endorse a certain brand publicly (for live appearances) but use different instruments in the studio. ...

Re: Minor Larry meltdown & other drumming shenanigans / crimes :)

I'm sorry if I over-reacted. I just read it entirely the wrong way, one of the pitfalls of reading a forum post.

Re: Minor Larry meltdown & other drumming shenanigans / crimes :)

Really?

I'm Puerto Rican (not a "white guy") and I play rock and metal, from straight to progressive. I guess I should have started breaking into a double bass hairta or something while just...

Re: Traditional grip for rock?

It's the other side of the "can't play jazz with matched" argument. It's all nonsense, just develop whatever you choose to do to a high level and you'll be fine.

Re: On teaching

George Carlin did an incredible rant on the pussification of America. One of the best routines anyone has ever done.

Re: How to play 4 against 7

Can I please hear an example of you playing a polyrhythm such as 8 against 9 "by modulating timbre or tone instead of a flam"

I call BS.

And for the record, Bill is correct. The formula he laid...

Re: Linear "Bonham" Triplets poll and discussion

I consciously moved away from the "Bonham" triplets years ago because every else was doing them (as with "quads" as well). The "RLF" pattern was actually one of the first cool patterns I ever played...

Re: How do you count while olaying drums?

Practice counting along with songs you are listening to.

Count every measure like 1234, 2234, 3234, 4234 etc.

This will make it much more useful than just repeating 1234.

Learn to count and...

Re: Methods for feeling or visualizing time?

In my own concept of time, visualizing time would actually be a step away from being fully in the time. I am making music (sound) and the time is an aural not a visual thing.

If you are...

Re: Step one to learning ;)

Actually I believe you wrote rrllrr
for the 6 strokes.

They are actually rllrrl
played as 16th notes. 1 is the r , the "e" and "+" are diddled so they are actually 32nd notes ( ll and rr) and...

Re: Step one to learning ;)

Guys, the "Six stroke roll" as an official PASIC Rudiment is as Bo describes it. PASIC recognizes no other grouping of notes as a six stroke roll

Go to the PASIC website if you like to verify.

Re: The worst gig of my life

Wow, I was away for a day or two and this thread grew considerably.

I may as well chime in again...

At least 90% of the notes you play are on the kick, snare, hi-hat and ride. Set those up well...

Re: The worst gig of my life

My man, your viewpoint in not an enabling one...

It comes down to this:

If you ascribe cause to anything outside of you, you give up control.

What this means (in non philosophical terms) is...

Re: The sound guy

In any field, people skills are critical.

I've never had a soundman that I couldn't win over.

The trick is to pit yourself in their shoes. Do you know how many "great" drummers they have to...

Re: paradiddle time subdivision question

Sure, it would depend on the tempo of the song (and your chops).

Re: paradiddle time subdivision question

Let me clarify this please.

The reason why one set of RLRR at 120 works out is because you are playing 4 notes per beat. That means you are playing the paradiddles as 16th notes.

The paradiddle...

Andy, this guy is awesome!

I felt a little better when I saw that he has already achieved a level of notoriety.

If this was just a guy you "discovered" bashing around I would have felt totally...

Re: Is hard to make a living out of jazz? Are there any jobs out there?

I don't think it's ever been easy to make a living as any type of musician.

I would also have to say that the number of young jazz drummers being pumped out annually by schools like Berklee and...

Re: Exercises to hit the 'middle' of a beat?

The absolute best exercise I know of for feeling the center of the beat uses a click that can play offbeat 16th notes.

Set the click to play the downbeat (1/4 notes) and the off beat 16th notes.

Re: Exercises to hit the 'middle' of a beat?

I hear what you're saying, but actually, it doesn't work that way.

You can be playing by yourself and still be playing "ahead of the beat"

If you listen to a drummer whose style demands...

Re: The harp as a percussion instrument

Any woman who had that played at her wedding would have just melted. Her friends would have melted as well and then gone green with envy.

Beautiful touch on the instrument.
