Re: Phil Rudd

I read through this entire thread and I'd like to make a few points. Before I go any further, I'd like to say that I'm a fan of his playing. It may be very simple but that doesn't mean it's always...

Re: How to build up weaker hand?

Something I stumbled across about a month ago that is really working my left hand. Soft buzz rolls going in and out of soft single stroked 16ths and 16th triplets. Keep all the single strokes soft,...

Re: Independence vs learning set patterns

I see I'm a little late to this discussion but I just ran across it and found it very interesting. I have a couple things to share.

Back in the early 90s a drum teacher gave me an assignment. I...

A revelation about my weak hand

I apologize if this post gets a little long, but I'd like to give a little background on how I stumbled onto this. Like a lot of guys, I'm always looking for ways to tighten up my left ( weak ) hand....

Re: Who uses Moongel?

I have nothing against dampening a little. A little dampening on the snare and a little less on the floor tom. That's about it for me. But I'd rather not use moongel or sticky stuff. I prefer...

Re: DrumMaker.com/Andy Foote - Experience in dealing with them??

About a year and half ago drummaker.com took me for about $100 worth of parts. My card was billed and I recieved an invoice in my email. I figured I'd be getting my order shortly. About a month went...

Re: Questions about luan and other shells

I'd say you did help me and I thank you. I never knew that the way the plies were laid would raise or lower pitch.

And you seem to know more about ramin than most. I know I heard that luan was...

Questions about luan and other shells

Question 1.
Why is it that luan seems to be the only drum shell material where the grain runs vertical while all other woods run horizontal? If drum shell plywood is like other plywoods, each ply...

Re: I'm a proud father

Sorry, didn't mean to mislead anyone with the title of my post. Oops.

I'm a proud father

I know this is a place for drummers. I've played drums for more than 30 yrs. My gigging days are over for now due to my work schedule. But back to my premise. My 15 yr old son expressed an interest...

In Praise of Old Swingstars

About five years ago I finally realized a goal of building my own set with keller shells. At that point I packed away my old swingstars that I bought new in 1985. A couple weeks ago I got the urge to...

Re: Phil Rudd

One thing I always liked about his drumming is how he would set up a chorus by loosening up on the hi hat. And the way he would sometimes accent the quarter note in eight note patterns on the hi hat....

Re: Rhythm Library

I checked his website a couple weeks ago and saw the demo of his open/close technique and it looked interesting, it looked very efficient. I think I'm gonna devote a little time to this and see what...

Re: Rhythm Library

Seems like no one's heard of it? It's a system to play rudimental solos on the snare drum or fills or solos on the drum set. The patterns produced are a continuous stream of notes with accents but no...

Rhythm Library

Is anyone familiar with the Rhythm Library Method by Gordy Knutdson? I practice it on the real feel pad with rudimental patterns and on the set with all four limbs. Once you get the hang of it, it's...

Anyone know where I can find this?

On my old computer I once downloaded a free app that would slow a song down without changing the pitch. That computer is now toast and I don't remember what that app was called.

Re: When does sound become music

To me, sound becomes music when it grabs something inside me, when it moves me emotionally and grabs my attention. This usually happens when I can sense that the musicians are making this "sound"...

Re: Has This Ever Happened To You?

Interestingly, I never heard Phil Rudd playing and thought that he should be doing more in any song. He plays 1 and 3 on the bass drum and 2 and 4 on the snare drum like he invented it. And...

Re: Brian Downey

Very happy to see Brian's profile added to the site. One of my all time favorites. He introduced me to shuffles ( although way back then I didn't even know what they were called )

Has This Ever Happened To You?

We hear and read a lot about "overplaying" and "playing for the music", and in the majority of cases I agree with those things. Nothing sounds worse than when the drummer steps all over a vocalist or...

Re: musical notation question

I'm not as concerned with how it sounds so such as how to write it out. But it did sound interesting. How many times have we heard a song in 4/4 with an 8th note grove then for a fill the drummer...

Drum Shell History Questions

If I understand things correctly, back in the day some drum companies used shells made from combinations of different woods on their pro level drums. And the old Tama Imperialstar was a pro line kit...
