Re: What performance defines drummers as musicians for you?

Stewart Copeland with The Police, his drumming was much more than one third of there sound and style...... but especially on "Roxane". Simple but musical and integral to the song.

Re: Dream Stealers and Drummers

"What stops us doing what we want to do"? Life gets in the way, often. My own experience being an example.

I was tapping on everthing, back in the early 60s, from about the age of about 6 or 7....

Re: Endings

We structure all our endings, the ending, like the beginning, is part of the song. If the band starts and finishes well, and at the same time, you can forgive quite a bit of what went on between....

Re: Time to work a little ATLAS magic

Sounds good. I gave thought to using the Atlas lugs and scissor lifts but they are very pricey. If they are already on your kit then its job done. I got rid of all my cymbal stands by using clamps...

Re: Jazz

Apologies, I took your post to mean you either played or wanted to play Jazz. My mistake.

And yea, I respect all drummers, they all bring something to the party, regardless of percieved ability...

Re: Jazz

You clearly dont like the music, so why would you want to play it? Not a pop just an honest question. I play the music I love and play it better, I think, for that reason. I play some Jazz Funk, not...

Re: Jazz

Nah, just a different way of interpreting a different music. I would guess you are a Jazz drummer.

Re: Jazz

This /\ Learn something that inspires and interests rather than cos it is percieved as "Harder". As a very well informed and respected drummer on here once pointed out, Jazz drumming is whatever...

Re: Why Musicians DON'T Deserve to Get Paid

Because, as has already been said, its about percieved entertainment value not percieved quality. Some are entertained by Mr West, so they pay. Its like any work, you dont get what you deserve you...

Re: Best Jazz Songs

As Bo says, what sort of Jazz? What do you like to listen too? Its easier to get your head round playing something if you like the song to begin with. Go on the net and search for Jazz stuff on the...

Re: Why Musicians DON'T Deserve to Get Paid

Very funny, but he misses the point on a few issues. Music's value is purely it ability to entertain. If people pay to see a band or singer perform it is to be entertained, the critical quality of...

Re: The state of pop music

Nothing new there though. Back in the day a mix would often be taken to an in car casette player to make sure it sounded good on poor equipment.

Re: Advice needed! Spare me some knowledge DW!

Are the students aware you will be taking over? You could spend quite a bit of time just finding out where there playing is and where they want to take it, are they prepared to pay for a lot of...

Re: Would You Match A Kit To Fit An Audition?

"Naturally it is all about my ability, connecting with the bands / artists and playing the parts as they want to hear them." (Quote)

That would suggest a pro act and you will be a hired gun? If...

Re: I'm at a loss. I can't tune a drum to save my life.

As the man said above, eliminate variables.

Strip the kit down and lube the tension rods to they can be moved using fingers only. Check the bearing edges for obvious damage or roughness. You...

Re: Would You Match A Kit To Fit An Audition?

I know its easy to talk extremes but I am sure you already konw, a Jazz kit for Jazz and a power kit for Rock. As for electronics? I dont know, even if they would be appropriate is it worth it for...

Re: How to stop playing slightly ahead of the beat?

Thats what is meant by playing behind or in front of the beat. The beat is felt, in the right place, and played either on, before or behind it. Thats what is meant by the time being elastic. Think...

Re: Left or Right play?

A lefty playing right, all the time, will, all else being equal, not have a weak hand. I am a righty playing right and have to work hard on my weaker left hand. Think about it.

Re: What's your favorite drumset category? Drums, cymbals or hardware

Hardware, but in a different way. I have just ditched all my cymbal stands by using clamps and boom arms, attached to the hi-hat stand and the BD tom mount, and mounting the ride off the floor tom...

We all learn in different ways and speeds, go with the method that suits you. If you are the personality that needs formal lessons and a tutor to report to and display progress, go with that. If...
