Re: 80s and 90s drums (the Glam Rock ones)

I have a 1989 Yamaha Recording Custom and it's in next to new condition!
Well cared for over the years. I use it on almost all my recording sessions and it's one of the best kits I've ever owned.

Re: Playing Live With a Metronome

I use a click live about 99.9% of the time.

It's rare to find me on a stage without one.
Only time I don't use it is if the bands has tempo changes that are not direct 1/2 time or double time,...

Re: Famous drummers mixing cymbal brands

The music video for "give it away now" shows a real clear shot of Chad Smith playing Zildjian Hi Hats, despite being with Sabian.

I think most of the mix & match game happens in the studio. It...

Re: The session guys!

I vote Freese as well.

Not taking away from Gadd, or any of the other guys, but they all came up in the 70's/80's. By the 90's session work was getting more and more sparse due to technology...

Re: using snare of different material than shellpack

By snare changes for every gig. I have about 10, none of them the same. I use what I feel fits the music the best, not my other drums.

I only ever owned one snare that matched a kit, and I rarely...

Re: Is this "Unprofessional"

I don't think it's unprofessional at all.

I bring a lot of "just in case" gear to every gig. Mostly tools, dampeners, felts, wing nuts, things like that.
But I only bring rods or brushes if we...

Re: When to do Free Gigs and Paid Gigs

As a full time musician, if I don't get paid I don't eat.

On the rare occasion I do a free gig it's because the situation was too good to pass on as it will directly lead to career advancement...

Re: Anti-Slip Drumsticks?

Zildjian & Vic have sticks dipped in rubber for added grip.
Same dip you can get from Home Depot for dipping your tools in.

Pro Mark has basic models (7A, 5A, 5B) available with a thick lacquer...

Re: Endorsement information

Most deals are exclusive, though hardware Vs. Drums can be an exception. You will occasionally see someone who plays Ludwig, but has a deal with DW for pedals or hardware. Ideally most companies want...

Re: What's your story about how you started drumming?

My mothers side of the family is all drummers....

My Mom, her Brother, their Father... Even a number of my 1st, 2nd, 3rd, cousins are all drummers. And if you aren't a drummer, you married one! No...

Re: Satellite Dish Anyone?

I've used satellite dishes in the past with Street Drum Corps. I got away from them because they just didn't last long. I'd have that thing cracked and destroyed inside of 4 weeks :(

Re: Yes, professional grade drum kits are pushed!

We had similar issues up at Griffith Park this past October.
We kept our kit set up for the whole month. Only played 4 nights a week, and just left it on stage the rest of the week. We didn't have...

Re: suggestions for best rods and brushes

Regal Tip classic retractable brush (583R) is still the benchmark.
I also use their Thai Sticks (Rods)... Like them better than Hot Rods.

I know Vinnie has a good relationship with the folks over at Yamaha. And they are accommodating to him, because well... he's Vinnie. Don't know if anything is official, but Vinnie is at a point where...

Re: Putting band name on kick drum head, with multiple bands?

I have multiple kick heads. I don't invest my own money in them though. If the band wants to have a logo kick head, make the band pay for it. Then swap for each gig...

That's what I do anyway.

Re: Hand percussion drum kit

I put together a neat little percussion kit for gigs.
It started with a 10" Djembe on a big Gibralter Djembe stand. I clamped a Bong stand to the back so now the two bongs sit over the Djembe (Like...

Re: Professional responsibility

I'll be honest.
I don't really ever watch "Drum Videos" on You Tube.
I know few of the online teachers and "You Tube Stars".
That kind of stuff doesn't appeal to me.

That being said, I keep...
