Tell me about an eight lug, 8" deep Keplinger steel snare

A member of one of my favorite bands is sending me an 8 lug, 8" deep Keplinger steel snare to record a solo album with. It was used on very hard rock albums... Like:

Re: Studio behavior and other questions (at Electrical Audio, Chicago, with Steve Albini)

Thanks for the feedback etc. There's really no reason for me to have another drummer play any of my parts, though. That first video (trust the flow) is from years and years ago, I've come a long...

Studio behavior and other questions (at Electrical Audio, Chicago, with Steve Albini)

I'm self-taught on guitar, bass, drums... and I'm not accomplished by any means, I'm not a sheet music reader, I'm not big on learning via tab etc., but I'm not totally closed-off to the idea of...

Re: Convert steel 6-lug snare to ten-lug? (and dampening questions)

Yes, the whole bearing edge was coated with an ultra-thin coat of RTV. Very minimal, not thick enough to be spongy, but enough so it was indeed there and capable of dampening. But I may have been...

Re: Convert steel 6-lug snare to ten-lug? (and dampening questions)

And let's talk dampening now.

I've been wondering about this for a long time, as I have no formal education on the subject.

So let's say I have a steel snare laid out in front of me. ...

Re: Convert steel 6-lug snare to ten-lug? (and dampening questions)

While I can somewhat appreciate what you're saying, unfortunately I simply don't work like that in anything I do. :p My upbringing, possible consumption of large amounts of paint chips as a...

Re: Convert steel 6-lug snare to ten-lug? (and dampening questions)

Yeah, I could get some 12 lug hoops, but I could also do ten and drill new holes. But I'd imagine that extra holes would be inviting sound to escape and/or dissipate funky.

The free-floating lug...

Convert steel 6-lug snare to ten-lug? (and dampening questions)

I had used a $100 ten-lug steel snare for a couple years, which sounded pretty darn good with the heads I had on it (http://youtube.com/causticgroove) .... but my progressive overtightening and...

Can I get some direction on some independent hi-hat footwork?

Howdy. I'm a rock drummer and I love my craft. I've slowly mastered every skill I've presented myself with over the years.... except one thing.

Queens of the Stone Age's Song for the Dead. It...

Good stuff. How about some Don Caballero? :D

Great one hand hi-hat work; I aspire to do that like you do.

Re: What in the world is this drummer doing??

He had to play quiet so the band could hear the track, so he felt like screwing around. Nirvana did something similar on MTV.

Ha, as a matter of fact my singer talked to Thomas on the phone last night about some recent shows in NY (NYC?)... lol

Re: My new band w/ Thomas Pridgen

GREAT.

My guitarist/lead singer knows a couple Mars Volta guys (he has one of their phone numbers still; it's been a while since they've been in touch though), I'll show him this stuff.

I'm...

Re: Setting another drummer straight

I'm not a musician to make others feel comfortable. I learned very early on, around age 9 or 10, that for some, doing so compromises what you're trying to say creatively speaking (notice I didn't...

Re: Anyone Think They Have What It Takes?

I've never solo'ed in my life. In between songs I only think about what's coming up next, and put a smile on my face. :p

Re: Scored a backup kit for ten bucks!!?? - need pointers on enhancing it...

Thanks.

There's no doubt that I'll be putting on new heads all around; I'm not even going to touch the set until I put those on.

So what about vinyl washers?

I am pleased that all the lugs...

Re: has the term "groove" been hi jacked?

Yes, the term is overused a bit, as not all drummers really have the knack. Some are just solid but lack groove; there's nothing wrong with that.

Personally I think Roy Mayorga's effort on...

Re: Applying for bands....

It's teenagers being teenagers... garage rock.... which IMO is awesome stuff. The youth energy in teen garage/punk is good stuff, as it's usually extremely raw, without regard for production or...

Re: You're views on Dave Grohl? Technique

I've been asking the question "why does he sound the way he does" since 1992... and it's been great fun learning from him.

His Scream stuff is pretty darn good too, as well as the...

Thanks for the replies thus far.

Re: Applying for bands....

Seems that with another year's practice he'd be a great frontman for a Mudhoney-ish band. or just some dirty punk band. He plays with spirit, and honestly I kinda like his plucky style. He might...
