Re: Playing at Ronnie Scott's tomorrow

Great stuff, great venue! I played at Ronnie's a few times in the mid-90's (and I also grew up in the West Midlands, haha!).

Enjoy it!

Re: Open-handed with traditional grip

I agree with that. Better to stick with matched for open handed playing IMO.
In the meantime maybe try tilting the hat more using the tilter, or hitting across the cymbal a little to find the...

Re: Mid-range drums stock heads comparision and other features

That's nice of course, but be aware that die-cast hoops are not necessarily better. They will cause the drum to have a different sound (usually drier, possibly a little more focused). Nice, but not...

Re: Can you read sheet music?

Yes! Reading is not that hard to learn, it's pretty logical, and it allows you to keep a record of something you want to play. In the early stages of writing any song with the band I can write down...

Re: My Kit Build Begins!

Wow, I wish my first kit had been as good as yours! Nice choices all round.

I'll bet 50p that you'll come home with another crash cymbal, lol

Seriously though, there are few greater...

Re: How do you cue your live tempos at the gig?

My method is a bit like this, but I use a small cheap metronome with a dial for tempos every 4-6 BPM so it's easy to set quickly at any tempo. It also has a flashing light on it so I have a quick...

Re: Simple 3 mic recording - opinions please

That may well be enough - it always surprises me what a difference a hard beater makes.

Mic'ing from the batter side helps a lot with attack too, but I have always found that can allow a bit too...

Re: IEM/Headphones with Microphone Outfront

I once heard of using a Shure Beta 91A mic as a monitor. It's a flat condenser mic that is great for kick drum mic'ing (sits directly inside the drum) but this one drummer said he put it on the floor...

Thanks for the thoughts guys. I'll keep an eye on it.

New snare wires - stretch?

I just installed a new set of snare wires on my Pearl FFS about a week ago. Ever since I changed them, the new wires seem to be loose after a bit of playing.

Now it could be that the tensioner...

Re: My drum teacher failed me.

Yes, but teachers in schools have to get a formal qualification to teach in schools. We don't often ask drum teachers for their credentials.

I had a similar situation to you in that I had an...

Re: My Signets and the gong

This is definitely the best reason to get a gong.

Re: Ludwig Supraphonic 402 New or Vintage?

There are probably more opinions on the LM402 on this forum than anything else (except possibly New Beats!).

Let me add my 2 cents:

I have a "non-vintage" (2009 I think) LM402 and it sounds...

Re: Tips on Ghost Notes.

Yep, what they all said!

David Garibaldi talks about the 'two level concept' which is a nice simple way of laying it out.
You have two levels of strokes, say full strokes and tap (ghost)...

Re: So...where do you keep your spare sticks?

Me too.
I like the holder on the hi-hat because I can put my left stick in it, and grab a drink with my left hand while I keep playing with my right...

Re: Drum sizes for small venue

I have a Ludwig Breakbeats kit that I used for my last two small gigs (both about 150 people). I wouldn't have it as my only kit, but it is great for that size of venue. We always seem to mic the...

Re: dumb question about keyholing

I once read an interview with Ronald Shannon Jackson where he said he would file the hole on some cymbals so that the 'sweet spot' stayed in the same place. That's the only time I've heard of...

Great to hear that you're back and cancer free.
Also I like your style getting back to gigging already! Very cool.

Re: Looking at your foot

Not looking at it as such, but I do sort of shift my mental attention to my foot at times, when I feel like it's not behaving itself and needs to do better! That often helps.

Re: Gretsch New Classic snare drum

As

Good plan. The Tune-Bot is good for checking or calibrating tuning, but it works best when combined with your ears. Tuning drums takes lots and lots of practice, and I'm still learning things...

Re: Gretsch New Classic snare drum

It's a great drum.

Mine is all stock heads, top tuned to 308 lug pitch, reso tuned to 348 lug pitch.

Sounds terrific.

Re: Ludwig Breakbeats Kit

So I gigged the Breakbeats kit again last night, at a different venue (about the same size - 150 people). Same band, different sound man.

Again the feedback on the sound was great, mostly the...

Re: Ludwig Breakbeats Kit

Well, I have a Breakbeats kit now, and I gigged it for the first time this week. It was a small room (about 150 people) and a small stage, so it seemed like a good chance to try them for real.

Re: Different grip on each hand

This stuff really doesn't matter. Choice of grip is a means to an end.

My grip changes all the time: as my hands move around the kit, when the feel of the music changes, as the speed of playing...
