Re: German grip, which German?

That's true: Syphilis is called the "french disease" over here.
But actually the Italians gave it that name way before we did, when the French invaded Italy back in 1500.

I first heard the term...

Re: Jim Chapin on open rolls(Double stroke roll)

My favourite way to work on even doubles is similar to the way Bermuda suggested:
put the downbeat on the second stroke
rllr rllr rllr rllr
lrrl rllr lrrl rllr
or even better in triplets:

Re: Lost another... RIP Frankie Dunlop...

Dear Scott,

it took me years to hunt down that Modern Drummer magazine, August 1985 (back then they were very rare over here in Germany) since this is as far as I know the only interview ever...

Re: Vernel Fournier Drum Techniques

I'll second Todd.
Took me years to hunt it down.
Some of the sticking exercises are nice, especially when brought up to tempo, but, as Todd said, just go and get the Mosaic box "The Complete Ahamd...

Re: Jazz Drum Solos on Ballads

Shelly Manne is the go-to guy for that kind of stuff.
Try "Autumn in New York" from "The Three"

Re: Open handed drumming - What do you think about it?

If you want to play Open Hand, just switch your feet and set yourself up like Daniel Humair, e.g.
Billy Cobham is left handed and plays a right handed set.
Daniel Humair is right handed (more or...

Re: Thomas Lang double stroke speed up/slow down

Jon Hiseman does this as a part of his drum solo feature for more than forty years now.
You should check him out. Thomas Lang did so, obviously....

Re: Jim Black on Ari Hoenig

By control I mean a certain kind of flawless execution which you only will get when you know EXACTLY what you're going to play beforehand.
I'd rather hear somebody go for it and fail and I'm...

Re: Jim Black on Ari Hoenig

Haha, nice try!
No, I'm not Jim; I haven't even talked to him in twenty years.
Just check my website: www.michaelgriener.de
Can I hear your music somewhere?
And please don't be so uptight;...

Re: Jim Black on Ari Hoenig

For me the only one sounding bitter is you....
I simply don't see Jim putting down Ari.
He just says Ari's a great player whose taste he doesn't get.
Fair enough.
But what you said about Jim is...

Re: Jim Black on Ari Hoenig

Wow, these discussions go out of control fast.

If Jim Black "sounds like every avant player in Brooklyn" it's probably because he's playing like that for 25 and more years and I can tell you back...

Re: Best camcorder to record drums on?

The best audio/video recorder on the market is the Tascam DR-V1HD.
Great sound quality, better video than the Zoom.
It uses three regular AA batteries (Alkaline or Ni-MH) and both the camera and...

Re: Bass drum opinions sought, especially from players of jazz, earth music, etc.

Actually 18" x 12" is still too deep for me.
I'm playing a old Slingerland Tenor Scotch "Haskell Harr" bass drum, which is 18" by 6.5"
It's sounds great in an acoustic setting (my bass players...

Re: Poll Tiem: Whose A Night in Tunisia drum solo do you enjoy more?

Hi, Todd

That's Kevin Shea of "Mostly Other People Do the Killing"
He actually can play.
A bit over the top sometimes, but quite good.

Greetings from a "German drummer".
