Re: Just arrived: a Guru Drumworks snare

This is absolutely stunning, man! Congratulations!

I'm surprised it's 1.5" thick. I always thought Guru was more into thinner shells. But those guys know what they're doing, obviously. It looks...

Re: What size is your main snare? Why?

Mine's a 14x5.5 Mapex Saturn Snare. I personally prefer 6" deep snares, but 5.5" is deep enough to do pretty much the same things I'd use 6" snares for--which is a lot of things. I love it not just...

Re: Has anyone used Narra wood before?

I'm actually thinking of taking up stave shell building too in my spare time, so I can help them out in the future.

They told me that they haven't gone thinner than 16mm because they don't want...

Re: Has anyone used Narra wood before?

This is true. The main buyers of narra here are furniture makers. Until our government instituted a log ban for it, narra was almost exclusively the wood of choice for wooden furniture and wooden...

Has anyone used Narra wood before?

Apparently, it's the Southeast Asian relative of African Padauk. Does anyone have any experience working with this kind of wood? What's it sound like, compared to, say, Maple? Or Birch?

Re: HELP!! Brass Snare Question

My cross stick sound got fatter after I started using s-hoops. I had 2.3 mm triple flange hoops before I started using them. Did you have die cast or wood hoops on? I imagine those would give you an...

Re: Show us your Mapex kits!

Oh, well, that explains why I haven't seen his name pop up in months. That might also explain why there haven't been as many cyber brawls in this forum recently. I kinda miss following those. :D

Re: Upgrading the Mapex saturn snare

I hope you're not planning on selling it, because if you fiddle around with it long enough, it'll give you what you want. I've played hard rock, funk, even jazz with this snare. I've used it both...

Okay, it's killing me. What did Sticks do to get the thread deleted?

Re: Well I Didn't See This One Coming... (DW Collector's Series Concrete Snare)

Does anyone else worry about the hoops getting damaged, or is it just me? I feel like it's a silly thing to worry about.

But I suppose the toughness of concrete isn't too far from steel or brass,...

Re: What Snare Would You Choose?

No offense, but isn't it kinda dangerous to be indifferent about how the drum's going to sound? I once bought Ahead sticks, partly because I wanted to spend less on buying drum sticks in the long...

Re: crush sublime tour vs mapex saturn studioease

If I didn't have the opportunity to check out both drums, I'd go with Mapex Saturns. In my (limited) experience, not a lot of drums sing as well as they do. With the right head choices, they can be...

Re: What happened to the Brass shell of Pearl Free Floaters?

Oh, great then! I'll go ask them about special orders. How thick are those shells, btw? 1mm? 1.5mm?

I wasn't able to disassemble the snare drum when I checked it out (darn!), but it sounded...

Re: What happened to the Brass shell of Pearl Free Floaters?

Does Guru have plans to make free floating snare drums? I've seen the specs on your Origin drums, and I've seen the vids showcasing the Origin drums. They sounded great! They must sound phenomenal in...

Re: What happened to the Brass shell of Pearl Free Floaters?

Nah, I don't collect for the sake of collecting. That said, I don't think about resale value much simply because, when I like something, I tend to keep it.

Would it make that much of a difference...

Re: What happened to the Brass shell of Pearl Free Floaters?

That so? I'll have to contact them about their brass shells.

If they still make the brass ones though, I guess I'm just surprised those aren't listed. I always thought those were pretty popular....

Re: What happened to the Brass shell of Pearl Free Floaters?

Hah! I just learned something new about resonance. To be honest, I haven't thought about free floating drums in a long time. I only started thinking about them again after I saw your Origin drums on...

What happened to the Brass shell of Pearl Free Floaters?

I used to be really interested Pearl's Free Floating Snare system because I heard that it resonated better than drums that had lugs. I haven't played one yet, though. A few days ago, a friend told me...

Re: Mapex Saturn Snare Love

I have a Pearl brass piccolo at home and I sometimes borrow my friend's 14x6 (or is it 6.5?) Ahead snare. For metal drums, I tend to like brass the best. Overall, however, I really like the organic...

Re: Drum mufflers- thoughts?

How are Singaporean laws on noise? Is it legally allowed to make noise up to a certain time of the day? Because if so, then as long as you practice within this time frame, your neighbors don't have...

Re: Mapex Saturn Snare Love

Really? That sucks! I didn't know that. I was trying to imagine what a Manhattan kit would sound like. Good thing you snagged one before they took it off the line.

Re: Mapex Saturn Snare Love

I know, I totally should! I just don't have the cash for it right now, but I'll save up for it. I am so getting one of those. I'm kinda interested in the Studioease kit, but with legs on the floor...

Mapex Saturn Snare Love

So I've had this 14x5.5 Saturn snare for a while now. I always loved its sound. I always thought it had a very sweet tone on top of a wide dynamic range. When I play live, however, too many things...
