Re: Drums in checked baggage?

I don't think I'd ever consider checking my drums. I have a hard enough time checking my cymbal case (gotten burned twice doing that). Not only would it be expensive (multiple oversized items, but I...

Re: 14" floor tom as rack tom

That sounds horribly unsafe, not only because of the weight of the drum but also because those mounts aren't designed for those forces.

Re: 14" floor tom as rack tom

I approve of your choice of examples :-)

Re: How To Get Drum Products To Review? Please Help

Note: I have absolutely no experience with these things, this is just a suggestion.

Instead of going straight for the manufacturers, you might have much better luck talking to a local drum shop....

Re: Laptop/backing cutting out live

Most laptops will allow you to replace the hard drive, but not all. Be sure to research that before buying a disk.

Also, beware that SSD disks are much more expensive per GB, and won't be anywhere...

Re: Laptop/backing cutting out live

That would be my guess. If you have a mechanical hard drive (non-SSD), it is very sensitive to vibrations and I could see it easily run into trouble if you use it next to a drum kit.

I guess you...

Re: What kills your buzz?

A dead snare head kills my buzz...

...get it?

.

Ok, serious answer: I get thoroughly depressed whenever I listen back to a performance or rehearsal session that I thought went reasonably...

Re: Playing to click - the mechanics

Agreed. What I meant by "primary" was that when the drums don't play and we still have to sync up with a backing track, another instrument keeps time (for lack of a better word). If I'm the only one...

Re: Playing to click - the mechanics

Everyone will have different opinions about this. Our ideal situation would be to have individual click tracks that were only sent to whoever was the primary timekeeper at that point in the song. So...

Re: Playing to click - the mechanics

That's exactly what most drummers do. Unless you have some seriously soundproof headphones or your band is unusually quiet, you'll hear them just fine.

I play my click tracks through a pair of...

Re: stick in the eye anyone? not for the meek!

I've sort of poked myself in the eye on one or two occasions, but never full-on hit myself. Still not a pleasing sensation mid-gig, but nothing like what you're describing.

Re: can anyone break this groove down?

Don't have time to try and break it down properly, but the groove seems to be purely linear (no two limbs hit at the same time).

Re: What is this snare?Josh Freese A perfect Circle - Mer De Noms

Hard to tell since it's gone through unknown amounts of processing in the studio, but it doesn't sound like bell bronze to my ears. If I had to guess, I'd say it's a steel snare.

Re: DANG IT!!!

Based on personal experience, I'm guessing he was adjusting a ball-in-socket tom holder, and it slipped somehow.

edit: I see it was a Yamaha, so most likely not ball-in-socket. I'm guessing Yamaha...

Re: Do drummers lose points for disassembling the moment the show is done?

This seems to be a regional thing. When I was in a band in Australia, we generally had to pack our gear out of the venue by closing time. However, here in Norway, venues are more than happy to let...

Re: Do drummers lose points for disassembling the moment the show is done?

For a five minute changeover (which isn't uncommon if each drummer only brings his sticks, cymbals and pedals), you really want to get off the stage as quickly as humanly possible. I've been in a...

Re: Do drummers lose points for disassembling the moment the show is done?

If we're the last band of the night, I generally won't feel the need to start dismantling right away. However, if there's another band coming up that use their own gear, I get my stuff the hell off...

Re: Carlock in, Phillips out

Wow, really? I can't picture that at all, but I'd be very curious to see how it would sound.

I'd love to see Pat Torpey give it a go.

Re: Carlock in, Phillips out

Meh, not surprising. Toto has been more of a "Steve Lukather and friends" project for the last decade (or longer). Granted, Simon's been there the whole time, but every other band member has been in...

Re: Can a mediocre drummer from Liverpool go on to fame and fortune?

Can I put a filter on the thread list that hides all the "Can a xxx be a yyy"? Seriously, the joke stopped being funny even before the first thread was posted.

Re: Shawn Pelton to Yamaha?

On a related note: Shawn Pelton is one hell of a drummer.
