What sleeves are you using on them? If you correctly use the yellow foam sleeves, they should stay in place fine, and provide pretty good isolation. (The rubber sleeves tend to pop out all the time...

Try contact (that adhesive book covering stuff), Gaff tape, skateboard grip tape, furry material, rubber underlay, or as you said, just paint them.

Of the Zappa stuff I would highly recommend "One Size Fits All" and "You Can't Do That On Stage Anymore Volume 2: The Helsinki Concert". REALLY cool stuff!

FZ himself stated on many occasions that the composition was WRITTEN first as a solo piece for drum set, and once Terry learned it, he wrote a melody and supporting parts... I loved how it ended up...
