Re: The curious case of Thomas Pridgen

These words are key. Once you leave the rehearsal room, music is a business. Making money at it depends on who will pay to hear that music, not necessarily how talented the players are. Jazz is a...

Re: Player date 2 or club date in a higher volume situation: which excels

I'm not familiar with the Player Dates, but I would agree that the Club Dates aren't made for projection.

A drum with a sharper edge will provide more attack and cut, and seem louder. In the...

Re: Interesting Observation Regarding Drum Quality and Sound Preferences

Drums are generally made better now than they were 40+ years ago. But Ludwig drums from a couple of eras - late-'50s to about 1963, and about 1968 to 1975 - are highly sought after for their sound,...

Re: Namm 2019 rumors

I think exclusivity has a lot to do with the fine thread rods. That is, when you need replacement rods, you must buy the DW brand.

Re: SPAM

Thanks, although the credit really goes to the forum's software that identifies and flags possible spam posts for the mods to see, but are hidden to the members. Just yesterday I handled about 200...

Re: Concert style tom's

Part of the beauty of single-headed toms is that you really hear the difference between heads and to an extent, can target the desired sound.

So a 1-ply clear head will have a clean attack with...

Re: Concert style tom's

That's where they sound best - with the mic right at the bottom edge of the drum. Too far inside and you get a choked 'boing' effect. There's not enough room for the sound wave to develop. Bottom...

Re: Concert style tom's

Correct! Countless drummers (no pun intended!) did that in the '60/70s and beyond. Perhaps part of the lure of actual concert toms was the look, and less hardware attached to the shell had a benefit...

Re: Concert style tom's

I have a nice little site about concert toms - www.concerttoms.com (http://www.concerttoms.com) :)

Single-headed tom sounds depend on same aspects that affect traditional toms: shell material &...

Re: Ludwig's new Signet 105 drum line!

Let me emphasize that I weighed the decision carefully and repeatedly before proceeding, and was apprehensive even while doing it. I had considered finding a drum repair guy to use a drill press and...

Re: Ludwig's new Signet 105 drum line!

Possible, assuming you want the drum to lay completely level (with the pedal attached.) You could take off another .75" or so, but you'd also need to shorten or grind some relief into the top of the...

Re: Ludwig's new Signet 105 drum line!

A 20" kick and wouldn't normally need a riser. A 22" definitely wouldn't. No, it was a poor decision on the placement of the leg holder.

The drum does sit almost level with the pedal attached,...

Re: Ludwig's new Signet 105 drum line!

Earlier in this thread, I said something about letting you know in 5 years if concerns about the Signets (such as lug holes being pulled out of round...) were legitimate. Well, it's 5 years ago this...

Re: Different, unique, or just wacky set-ups

Very early on we played Hop Singh's and At My Place, but that was the extent.

Re: Different, unique, or just wacky set-ups

Not punks per se, but New Wave, Rockabilly and alternative bands. I played all the 'gone' clubs: The Arena, Londoner, Blackies, Blue Lagune Saloon, Wong's, Lingerie, Cathay deGrande, Valley West...

Different, unique, or just wacky set-ups

I came across this pic of my kit from a 1982 video, with the cymbal arms forming a V to match the band's logo. I realize now just how much torque would be applied to the top of the 3-ply kick if I...

Birthday & New Year's gigs?

How many gigs have you done on your birthday? And how many on New Year's Eve?

My birthday count is 18 (during 1977-2018) and my NYE total is 19 gigs during the same period, including tonight. My...
