Yeah, if you cant afford an e-kit, try mesh heads, I have never played them but I think they work pretty well as volume goes. Im not sure about stick response though.

IMO, if you would like to improve 1-2 hours a week wont do it any time soon, I would suggest at least 14 hours per week. I usually play 10 to 18 depending on whats going on.

I have to pretty much agree with this, I do belive in practicing on a pillow with regular sticks though. Doing so will build endurance and make your muscles work a little harder to produce the same...
