Re: Finish Question

Looks a lot like this finish from Drummaker...

Re: My First Ludwig Acrolite

Nice drum!

Acrolites (like all metal Ludwig snares) can handle a pretty wide range of tuning, but new heads would probably help dial in a better low tuning, as would a little Moongel.

Re: Some Pearl Reference Pure porn ;)

Classy! I'm really digging the big and centered hi hat set up.

Re: Best Maple Drumkit around $1000

Agreed. PDP Concept, Gretsch Catalina, Mapex Meridian...All maple, all right around $1000, all good quality.

Which one has the color you want? 'Cause essentially everything else is going to be...

Re: The matching snare

The metal/matching snare seems to come and go with trends in the industry. Same as the 5" or 6.5" depth. When I got into drumming in the 80s it seemed like most "cool" kits came with a 6.5" deep...

Re: What's the better option: new or used drum kit?

If you're shopping used in the pro-level range bearing edges shouldn't be an issue unless you're looking at something really vintage or the rest of the kit looks especially abused. You could also...

Re: Restoring WFL 15x8 Snare - need advice on snare wires

Taking a quick look at Interstate Music shows both Puresound and Fat Cat make 15" wires. I've used both brands and I personally don't hear the $10 difference in price, so I'd recommend the Fat Cats....

Re: Mystery Ludwigs

Interesting batch of drums.

None of the hardware on the small snare looks like Ludwig equipment.

The marching snare looks like it is a Ludwig, but has had the throw off changed.

The bass...

Re: Mapex Pro M vs Mapex Saturn

I'd go for the Saturn. It's just a better kit (assuming it's in good condition) and the price seems fair.

Re: Ludwig Club Date for $499

The 60s Ludwig kit I played in college had the same spurs as the new Club Date. I never had a problem with them, and never gave them a second thought. Until now...

I guess it's easy to look at...

Re: SuperSensitive get snares OFF?

I've had luck by simply not moving the lever all the way down as far as it will go. There's a middle ground between all the way on and all the way off where the snares are off the head well enough...

Re: And my completed Pearl Reference Pure kit

Beautiful kit! It doesn't always come across in pictures but piano black is a really classy finish. Pearl makes great drums and Reference Pure's thinner shells makes a good idea even better. Even...

Re: a little help with this super sensitive please?

Pretty sure you need to drill for both butt plate holes, and one throw off hole assuming a P-85/P-32 pairing.

Re: Tama Silverstar Maple Limited Edition

Tama's always been shy about doing a mid-level maple kit, but perhaps this limited edition is to test the waters for a production kit down the road.

As for the original post, I think if the price,...

Re: a little help with this super sensitive please?

The Super Sensitive mechanism is a funny piece of equipment. Much like the P-85 some love it and some hate it. In my experience they take time to set up properly and can be tricky to maintain, but...

Re: a little help with this super sensitive please?

I used to own a 70s-era Supra that must have had flaking chrome because the previous owner repainted the shell with black appliance epoxy paint. That's probably what you have there.

Re: Ludwig Legacy in Emerald Sparkle Fade Finish

Any time you talk about finishes, you're going into some pretty subjective territory.

Personally, I don't care for fades at all, but the lack of an actual fade on that particular finish made it...

Re: Ludwig Legacy in Emerald Sparkle Fade Finish

When Ludwig first introduced the Legacy line (2007 I think?) they offered two lacquer finishes; Emerald Sparkle and Copper Sparkle.

They weren't popular and were VERY quickly dropped in favor of...

Re: Ludwig P-85 rant

That's the thing for me. I don't have a problem with the P-85, and I'm usually first in line for defending it as a throw off.

But...

Admitting that there is room for improvement in the P-85...

Re: Pearl Vision Birch - please help!

I had a Pacific CX kit that had some dodgy edges similar to these, and Precision Drum's recut made a world of difference. My last kit had good (but not great) edges, but I had already planned on...

Re: Ludwig P-85 rant

I once asked my P-85 to go get me a beer. Not only did it not do it, it pretended it didn't even hear me.

Man, the P-85 is a sucky throw off...

Seriously though, while I've never had any...

Re: Pearl Vision Birch - please help!

As they say "well, there's your problem..."

A little unevenness will have some impact but what you've got is definitely the cause of your tuning nightmares. Have the edges recut professionally...

Re: Is this true about drums made from cheap wood?

Yes and no.

I really don't think of poplar and basswood as inherently "cheap" as much as many "cheap" drumsets just happen to be made from those woods. Much the same as many equate B8 as a...

I have mixed feelings, but in general I don't feel sorry at all.

All of the great stuff from the past we enjoyed is still out there, and because of the digital world we now live everyone has...

Re: Pearl Vision Birch - please help!

If you don't want to go the DIY route on bearing edges, I'd recommend sending them off to Precision Drum to have the edges re-cut.

I've done this with my last two kits and have been impressed with...
